UPDATE: ECU To Face UNC In Elimination Game Sunday

East Carolina and UNC will square off Sunday at 1 pm in an elimination game in the NCAA tournament.

The Tar Heels lost 5-4 to St. John's Saturday night. Danny Bethea hit a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to give the Red Storm the comeback win.

ECU beat Cornell 10-6 earlier Saturday in another elimination game.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- Tyler Joyner allowed one hit in nearly five innings of relief to help East Carolina beat Cornell 10-6 on Saturday in an elimination game in the NCAA tournament's Chapel Hill Regional.

Jay Cannon drove in two runs to lead the second-seeded Pirates (36-23-1), who pushed ahead for good with a five-run fifth inning then added three more runs in the seventh to get some cushion. Cannon had an RBI double while John Wooten had a run-scoring single during the seventh.

Joyner (6-2) came on in the fifth for starter Kevin Brandt and finished with three strikeouts in 4 2-3 innings.

Tom D'Alessandro and Ben Swinford each had two RBIs for the fourth-seeded Big Red (31-17-1), who lost to host North Carolina on Friday. Cornell was making its second NCAA appearance and first since 1977.

Brian McAfee (6-1) took the loss, allowing eight hits and six runs in 4 2-3 innings.

ECU tallied 10 runs on 15 hits en route to a 10-6 win Saturday afternoon against Cornell in an elimination game at the Chapel Hill regional of the NCAA tournament.

Six Pirates registered multi-hit games including Drew Reynolds who hit a solo home run in the third inning.

ECU will play on Sunday at 1 pm. They'll face the loser of Saturday's North Carolina-St. John's game. Cornell meanwhile is eliminated from the tournament.
