Cunningham Starts Work To Reshape UNC Athletics

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham is reshaping the 28-sport program as he prepares for his first full year in charge.

Cunningham arrived last fall from Tulsa during the middle of the school year and amid the turmoil of an NCAA investigation of the football program. He hired Larry Fedora away from Southern Mississippi as the new football coach, then spent the next few months observing from the background.

Cunningham says the athletic department is compiling a new strategic plan for onfield goals and funding priorities, along with another for facility improvements. The school has brought in consultants to review compliance procedures following the NCAA probe.

Chancellor Holden Thorp says he appreciated how Cunningham took time to learn as much as he could about UNC before making changes.
