WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) -- Wake Forest has reeled off four straight wins on the strength of a defense that's forcing turnovers and not giving up many third-down conversions.
That's the formula that carried coach Jim Grobe's team to the 2006 ACC title and three straight bowl games.
Nobody's booking plane tickets to Miami for the Orange Bowl just yet. But these Demon Deacons (4-1, 3-0 ACC) are starting to play like some of those teams.
Two key stats for that '06 defense were its turnover margin of plus-0.93 and its ability to hold opponents to a 35 percent conversion rate on third down.
This year's team has even better numbers in those areas -- a turnover margin of plus-1 and a third-down rate of 32.4 percent.
Wake Forest hosts No. 19 Virginia Tech Saturday.
