Change Marks Start Of Spring Practice At Duke

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- This sure doesn't look like the same old Duke football team.

The Blue Devils on Monday began a spring practice season in which part of the emphasis will be on putting the ball in mobile quarterback Anthony Boone's hands and letting him run with it.

By introducing elements of the zone-read offense, David Cutcliffe is making a significant change. His pro-style system helped turn Peyton and Eli Manning into Super Bowl MVPs.

Cutcliffe says the switch was made in part because his personnel is better suited to run it. This scheme better takes advantage of Boone's skill set.

He's taking over for three-year starter and classic drop-back passer Sean Renfree. Duke also lost its two top receivers, including the most prolific in Atlantic Coast Conference history -- Conner Vernon.
