Tar Heels Lend Blue Blood Feel To NIT Semifinals

NEW YORK (AP) -- North Carolina is providing some star power to the semifinals of the NIT.

One year after winning the national championship, the Tar Heels have a chance to add another tournament trophy to their overflowing case, even if it isn't the one most fans expected.

Ranked highly to begin the season, North Carolina slogged its way to a 16-16 finish before winning three games in the NIT to reach the semifinals at Madison Square Garden.

The Tar Heels will play Rhode Island on Tuesday night.

The other semifinal features two teams much more familiar with this tournament. Ole Miss is playing in it for the third time in four years, while Dayton is making its 22nd appearance, second only to St. John's for the most of any team.

Although I am not putting a lot of stock into winning the NIT Tournament, as a Carolina fan I AM happy watching them play better defensively and running good sets on the offensive end of the court. Hopefully, they can take what they have done during this tournament, and carry it over into next season.
