CHAPEL HILL - Deon Thompson had 23 points and eight rebounds to help No. 6 North Carolina beat Belmont Abbey 107-59 on Friday night in its only exhibition game of the 2009-10 season. Thompson hit 11 of 12 field goal attempts in 17 minutes of action.
Tyler Zeller scored 17 points for the defending national champions, while Ed Davis added 13 points, six rebounds and four blocks. The Tar Heels shot 57 percent and took a 56-36 advantage on the boards against the undersized instate Division II program.
Marcus Ginyard returned to action for UNC after redshirting last season with a broken bone in his foot. Ginyard tallied nine points, six asssists and four steals in 18 minutes. Freshman David Wear also scored nine points for the Tar Heels. Fellow freshman Dexter Strickland had eight points, Travis Wear had seven, Will Graves had six and John Henson had five for Carolina. Justin Watts and Terrence Petree scored four points apiece and Larry Drew II added two to round out the UNC scoring.
North Carolina used a 10-0 spurt for a double-digit lead six minutes in, then put it out of reach with a 13-0 run that made it 55-29 shortly before halftime. Carolina led by as many as 52 points.
The Tar Heels open the regular season Monday at 7 p.m. in the Smith Center against Florida International.
Richard Barbee scored 15 points for the Crusaders.
