#5 N.C. State Wins 5th Straight Game

RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 5 NC State baseball built a 6-0 lead through three innings before dropping UNC Wilmington 7-2 on Tuesday night at Doak Field at Dail Park.

The Wolfpack (38-11) won its fifth straight and the 20th in its last 21 contests. UNCW (34-15) fell to State for the second time this season, following a 10-6 loss in Wilmington in March.

Logan Ratledge kept his momentum going from a solid weekend against Presbyterian, turning in a 2-for-4 performance with two RBIs and a run. Trea Turner went 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base, his 23rd of the year. Jake Fincher submitted a 2-for-5 night with a run and an RBI to improve to 47-for-49 on reaching base in games this season.

Brett Austin drove in one with an RBI double in the first, with his 16th double of the year. Brett Williams scored once in a 1-for-3 game with a walk. Bryan Adametz contributed a run in a 1-for-3 outing. Grant Clyde had his 10-game hitting streak come to an end, but did score once and stole a base in the game.

NC State reliever Travis Orwig (3-0) claimed the win by holding the Seahawks to one hit over 1 2/3 innings from the fifth through the sixth. Orwig took over in the fifth after UNCW cut the Wolfpack lead to 6-2 and struck out the side in the sixth inning.

Starter Brad Stone allowed two earned and struck out five over four innings, holding the Seahawks to two hits. Andrew Woeck pitched 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief as the first arm out of the Pack bullpen. Ryan Wilkins and Grant Sasser pitched the final two innings, combining to strike out a pair and allow just one hit.

UNCW starter Blaze Tart (2-4) ended up with the loss on six runs, but only one earned, over the first 2 2/3. The Seahawks utilized four more pitchers on the night, combining to allow one earned over the next 5 1/3.

NC State started the scoring in the bottom of the first. Fincher singled to right with one away, then scored on Austin's laser double down the right field line. The Pack added two more in the second on a two-out rally.

Ratledge laid down a bunt single, then scored when Turner's fly to right was dropped for an error. Turner advanced to second on the play and scored on Fincher's single up the middle to make it 3-0.

The Wolfpack ripped the game open in the third on a rally started by Clyde reaching on a fielding error at short. Williams singled through the left side to put two on and executed a double steal with Clyde to move both into scoring position with two away.

Adametz was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ratledge knocked the first two in on a single to left center. Adametz scored from second on Turner's single through the left side.

UNCW chipped into the 6-0 lead with two runs in the fifth. A hit batsman and a walk put two on with nobody out. Luis Renville sent a ground-rule double into the Wolfpack pen to score the first. Michael Bass hit a sac fly to center to score the next, but Williams caught the fly and gunned down the runner trying to advance to third for a crucial double play to kill the rally.

State added one more insurance run in the sixth, started by Turner's leadoff single through the left side. He stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch during the next at-bat. A wild pitch with one out scored him.
