NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Tom Walter has accepted the head baseball
coaching job at Wake Forest, leaving behind a University of New
Orleans program with an uncertain future.
Walter had a 153-147 record in five seasons in New Orleans. He
coached the Privateers to NCAA regional appearances in 2007 and
UNO athletic director Jim Miller says he is sorry to see Walter go and credited him with putting Privateers baseball back on the map.
Miller says a search for Walter's successor will begin immediately. However, the future of Division I sports at UNO remains tenuous. Because of anticipated significant reductions in state funding for higher education in Louisiana, UNO is considering major cutbacks in athletics.
