White Fantastic But Heels Fall To ASU In Omaha Opener

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Kole Calhoun hit a three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning after a North Carolina error helped Arizona State take the lead, and the Sun Devils won their College World Series opener 5-2 on Sunday.

Jason Kipnes reached when right fielder Garrett Gore misplayed his one-out fly ball near the warning track. Carlos Ramirez followed with a base hit up the middle, scoring Drew Maggi from second to break a 1-1 tie.

Calhoun then drilled Moran's 1-1 pitch four rows into the stands in left-center field for a four-run lead.

ASU (50-12) plays Tuesday night against the winner of Sunday night's Southern Mississippi-Texas game. The Tar Heels (47-17) will play the Southern Miss-Texas loser in a Bracket 2 elimination game the same day.

Until the 10th the Sun Devils and Tar Heels engaged in a rare CWS pitchers' duel.

Carolina's Alex White, who went nine innings in his fourth CWS start, matched his career-high with 12 strikeouts. The Cleveland Indians' first-round draft pick was touched for three doubles in the first two innings, but he allowed only four singles the rest of the way in his 131-pitch performance.

Australian left-hander Josh Spence allowed eight singles over seven innings. The Los Angeles Angels' third-round pick walked three and struck out eight in his 122-pitch outing, then gave way to lefty Michael Lambson (9-3) in the eighth.

Lambson gloved Garrett Gore's hard liner and threw to first to double up Levi Michael, ending the eighth, and then caught No. 2 overall pick Dustin Ackley looking at a pitch on the inside corner just above his knees to end the ninth.

North Carolina got a run back in the bottom of the 10th. Kyle Seager doubled and scored when second baseman Zack MacPhee couldn't come up with Michael's grounder. Lambson struck out Mark Fleury and Gore to end the game.

Colin Bates (4-3), who faced one batter in the 10th, took the loss.

To Carol, I was just saying that to get NYY to respond back to but he did not. As far as Jesus, I do have Jesus in my heart and go to church on a regular basis. It's not hatred, it's pride in standing up for NC, even though I still do not like NY at all after what I witnessed there. I just can't stand that place. BTW, this Atlanta Braves fan would pull for any major league team over the Mutts (what I call the Mets). Anyhow, thanks for the concern. Everything is alright. BTW for others, it's right now UNC 10 and SoMiss 3 in the bottom of the 7th with one out. Looks like UNC will play Texas or AZ ST.

Alex has always been a class act. Hate on the school, leave the young man out of it. He didn't lose that game, he kept his team in it for 9 innings. Give me a pitcher that can hold a team to 1 run in 9 innings in college ball any day!

To NYY...you hate NC so badly, move back to NY. To Sam...You have too much anger and hatred. Either you need Jesus or Anger Mgm.'t classes or both. Life is too short and too precious to have so much hatred in your system. Besides, it's unhealthy. To the issue at hand, I wish Alex White all the best in his professional baseball career.

Well it looks like Alex Whites college career is done after another loss and it's time to focus on professional ball. Lets go Southern Miss. Represent Conference USA in a great way and send these holes back to Chapel Hole.

To NYY, I HATE ALL NY teams, especially the Mets, the Yankees, the Knicks, the Jets, the Giants, the Rangers, the Islanders, the Liberty, St. Johns, All the Ivy league schools, the Bills, the Sabres, Syracuse(hate them even worse than the in state ACC teams and tried to kidnap Skip Holtz), Binghamton(cause they are out of NY), Stoney Brook(cause they are out of NY), etc., well not really the small colleges, but I seriously hate the Mets, Jets, Knicks, and Syracuse about as bad as I hate Iraq and Afghanistan and your New York State is a ghetto dump compared to this great state of NC.

I was referring to the missed fly ball by UNC that allowed ASU to keep scoring. The UNC player should have caught it and he did not. Therefore, they got a lucky bounce. Mad props to ASU, I am not pulling for UNC, but they had more errors which means ASU had the lucky bounce.

White didn't lose the game Fredo.

Um ASU got all the lucky bounces....A 3run HR is not a lucky bounce...also everyone is forgetting the pitching performance of the ASU pitcher. Outstanding....and it wasn't even their best pitcher.

Glad UNC lost. Especially glad that White was the loser!

Alex White was awesome! 9 out of 10 times UNC would have won that game with a pitching performance like that. ASU got the lucky bounces in that game.
