Tar Heels* Bates Drafted By Oakland

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. * North Carolina redshirt sophomore right-hander Colin Bates was chosen in the 37th round by the Oakland Athletics Thursday on the final day of the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Bates* selection gives the Tar Heels a school-record-tying seven picks in this year*s draft, equaling the 2000 and 1985 drafts.

With the seven players picked in this year*s draft, Carolina tied for the 10th-most selections. Joining Bates as draftees were: Dustin Ackley (first round, Seattle), Alex White (first round, Cleveland), Kyle Seager (third round, Seattle), Mark Fleury (fourth round, Cincinnati), Adam Warren (fourth round, New York Yankees) and Brian Moran (seventh round, Seattle).

In 31 games out of the UNC bullpen this season, Bates is 4-2 with six saves and a 2.84 ERA in 57 innings. The Naperville, Ill., product owns 59 strikeouts to just 16 walks and is holding the opposition to a .238 average. In 58 career appearances, Bates is 10-3 with a 2.81 ERA.

Tar Heel signees Cody Stiles (39th round, New York Yankees) and R.C. Orlan (44th round, Los Angeles Dodgers) were also picked Thursday, brining the total number of signees picked to seven.
