In this tough economy, how does a 50 dollar home sound? One woman decided to extend her offer to give away her Beaufort County home for just 50 bucks.

Mary Jordan and her husband started an offer to help a family get into a home for 50 bucks with an essay explaining why they deserve the home.

The original deadline was on April 15th, but Jordan has decided to extend the offer to the end of April.

Jordan says they need 2,700 entries to cover the cost of their home and so far have only received 31.

She is hoping that more people will enter and says the letters that she has received already are heartbreaking.

Jordan say if they don't get enough entries, they will refund all the money.

The deadline for a chance to own a home for $50 dollars has been extended.

The original date entries had to be in was this Sunday, but the sellers Leslie and Mary Jordan say they haven't received enough essays from people writing why they need the home.

The Jordans are from Beaufort County and wanted to sell the $140,000 home to help someone who needs a place to live.

50 dollars is the cost of the entry fee and the Jordans say they want 2,700 entries before they make a decision.

You can call (252) 945-4231 for more information.

Original Story:

How does a house for 50 dollars sound?

You can get the home of Leslie and Mary Jordan in Beaufort County. They are holding a contest to award their three bedroom, two bath double wide to someone.

It only costs $50 bucks to enter and all you have to do is write an essay why you deserve to win. i

It's a way for the Jordans to get a decent price for their home on Lovick Lane just outside of Washington and for someone else to get a home for next to nothing.

Mary Jordan the owner of the home says "because of how the economy is people can not afford to get loans for houses and this way especially a young family or a needy family has a chance to get a house. I had people ask me why not do a raffle and I do not want to do that because people with more money will buy more raffles and they will get a bigger chance and that is not what it is about"

The home sits on almost one and a half acres and includes a shop with gameroom. The Jordans need at least 2, 700 entries to get what they want for their home.

You can call (252) 945-4231 for more information.

I see the lack of patience has killed the chances to get the house. Rest assured the money has been returned. I got mine on Friday May 29, 2009. All those looking for theirs...it should be in the mail. Plus if the Jordans continue to run it...these people who are getting their precious money back will be included if the contest continues without having to pay the money again. Thereby possibly winning it without giving a cent. Also they plan on having the cookout soon. I think everyone who was negative to Mary and Leslie should apologize! They are still thinking of each and every one of you! God bless them!

I have not been able to get an answer either. My friend signed up for this and has not gotten her money back either.

Can anyone tell me what's going on. Have they picked a winner or what? I tried calling the number and left a message but no one has returned my call.

I'm upset that it's getting extended again! Just return these poor peoples money and be done with it! You know that in this economy you're not getting 2700 entries! You should of known that from the beginning! A give away is just that, if you're getting $135,000 for it it's not a give away is it??? I had faith in the beginning now it's just gone too far! People this day need their $50! You holding it is not right! Either give the house away or return the money! A CHARITABLE thing would be to give it away not get $135,000 and then pick a name from a hat! How is that not a raffle? This has gone on too long and it's sad for all the people who had hopes and dreams of getting a new house!!!!!! Now they are getting nothing and still are out of $50! This was misleading from the beginning and it's very sad!!!!! I pray that God forgives you for this! This is not a "WORTHY" thing!! I just pray that my $50 is returned to me!!!

This is nothing but a scam. If not, then why would she extend the deadline. If this was an act of kindness, then she would have stuck to the original date.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 17, 2009 at 12:37 PM
Why do you all have to be NEGATIVE about EVERYTHING on this site? Give it a break, someone is just trying to do a worthy "favor".. stop criticizing every little thing!

Posted by: Jo Location: washington on Apr 17, 2009 at 06:22 AM
Perhaps maybe if bloggers would quit giving negative feedback and try to be positive about this house more people would try for it. They are trying to do a very charitable thing...encourage it...get ones you know to try for the house...pay the fees your self and a note why a friend may be in need of it. I feel that the Jordans keep extending the deadline to try and accomplish the act that they feel God has laid on their heart to help a needy person. We should help them.

Looked like a nice little scam at the start. Still does. Good luck getting your money back.

I checked with "therichcompany.com" for MLS: 21785, and got this: The Listing Number You Entered Was Not Found. Please Try Again. Is it still listed? Also, to Anonymous who posted 4/16 at 9:09 pm, I'm not sure that just living in a double wide makes it any less valuable. Some people upgrade while they live in a home, so it may be worth more. I had a family member recently buy a double wide for $90K and they have already spent another $20K adding brick underpinning, front porches, and landscaping. So, depending on the money spent in remodeling or upgrades, the home could be worth a lot more than the original purchase price. However, double wides are not cheap these days. Factor in 1.5 acres and a shop... it's worth the asking price!

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 16, 2009 at 09:09 PM
no double wide tailer is worth 140,000 once it is lived in they must of bought a bad deal and trying to get from underneath it but 50 dollars aint bad for a double wide

Ok so today is the 16th not the 15th so please let someone know what's going on with the house.

Ok today is the 15th and I'm ready for some sort of answer. Either a winner or money back. It has been dragged out long enough now! Please make a decision of some sort and let people move on from this! When and How will we know anything??????????

Ok people just to let you know i happen to think what Mary Lou is doing is great thing, I myself, am a widow and have 4 kids with two with special needs, at times i cant make it to the end of the month, and to be able to win a home that i can call our own would be wonderful, there are still good people out there and i believe with all my being that Mary Lou is one of them, i have meet her and i happen to think that she and her husband can show people that there is still hope, and that all are not out for them selves, so Mary Lou to you don't worry about the negative people, i believe in what you are doing and i believe in god, so with a little hope and a lot of faith, a lot could happen, this world would be a better place if more people were like you and your husband

Posted by: HR on Feb 18, 2009 at 11:09 PM
How many entries do you have? At what point will you decide not to go on with this and send the money back? I still have faith in what you're doing and think that it's a great thing if you can get that many entries.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: NC on Feb 17, 2009 at 11:49 AM
What is the cut off date or amount of letters to be received before this contest concludes? I was under the impression that the 2,700 entries mentioned would amount to the intitial asking price - not the amount of entries needed to complete the contest!

I don't have a problem with the way this is being done. But if I remember right, charity is from the heart not from the pocket book. If I donate my car to charity, I get a tax write off, not cash back.

Leslie just spent two weeks in Louisiana(along with other area church members)helping rebuild homes for the people who lost their homes to the storm. He is constantly helping out those in need in his own community. Would this kind of person be dishonest with his home or in anything else for that matter? Mary Lou would give her last penny if she thought someone needed it. Maybe it's because I know them personally that I can say this. For those of you who don't, maybe you should get to know them before you judge them. I know that in this day and time it can be hard to trust others but it would be much better to get the facts before making negative comments like I've read in these blogs. We do still have good honest people in this world. Don't let the ones who aren't blur your vision.

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 15, 2009 at 11:58 AM
So let's say someone wanted to buy this house, but couldn't qualify for the loan. But the agent & buyer realize $50 from a small, gambling portion of our population would easily pay for it. And what a coincidence!- the winner turns out to be the person who wanted to buy it before the contest was even created. God works in mysterious ways! The agent gets their commission, the buyer gets a free house and the seller makes their profit. The Jordans seem to be good people who have every right to want to sell their home and are obviously convinced they are helping someone. Although, the 2,699 are the only people giving anything. Jo, didn't you say you were the first contestant and champion of this cause? What's The Rich Company's role in this? They don't advertise for free. Watch the deed transfers this year, see how many times this one changes hands. My $50 says the winner flips it. How about you pick the winner first and then ask everyone to donate $50?

How will you know these stories are true? Anyone could write a sad story if you don't know them. My neighbor could write you and say... He is sick, his wife has cancer, they have three children, living in the car, one child was molested at school, one child can't walk... I mean.. come on.. how are you fact checking these stories?

Mary Lou said: I cannot believe that people would rather anyone, not just us, to never try to help someone out than not at all. That is just the point, this only helps 2 families out but the other 2699 pay the price for them. One that seems to need a house and the other for ?.

Has anybody done the math on 2700 x $50.Great sales gimmic my hats off to you in a down economy finding a way to sale your house.

To Anonymous on Feb 13, 2009 at 08:24 PM: If you have truly read all the blogs you would see I have NO cut. I am the first contestant and feel that if I wil I am blessed by God, the Jordans and the others who tried as well. If I am NOT the winner, I have helped bless a needy family receive the house...this would make me one of the 2699 losers at that point. People please look into your own hearts and minds, seek the direction from the Lord on whether this is true and of God then either help someone needy or just leave the money in your pocket. If you are in need of a home and needy, take the risk, the Lord will bless you in the end. Any one has any questions call me 252-833-4457 or email me at gunkieboom@msn.com. There is nothing to hide nor any deception of any kind. God will bless those who do unto the least of us.

It's me again! I wanted to let everyone know that this is a doublewide in great condition, with brick underpinning big front and back porch, large fenced in yard. Their is also a 30'x50' metal building with the pool room inside with a pool table. You may go to therichcompany.com to see photos, MLS#21785. I am sorry that some people are being so critical about this, when all we want is to sell the house but give it to a family who otherwise would have never been able to get their own home. My husband and I have said after reading letters we wish we could buy everyone a home. If you are in a decent home, count yourself blessed! Even IF we did a raffle, there would still be losers, but there would still be 1 winner. I cannot believe that people would rather anyone, not just us, to never try to help someone out than not at all. What kind of world would that be? One family at a time is better than none. Have a blessed day.

Did I say I was perfect? No, but I insist that you can tell a great deal about others from what they say. Since you have referenced God's Word for support, consider Jesus' words in Matthew 15:18: "But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.'" The uncharitable slander that has been leveled against the Jordans says much about those who have written it. Words, spoken or typed, tell the tale on the heart. Jesus' brother James said in 3:8: "But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison." The words that come from someone's mouth (or from their fingers) come from their heart and they reflect the condition of the heart. If someone who does not know a couple slanders them, then they demonstrate what's going on inside their own heart. We live by our words; how we speak is how we think, and it shows what's going on inside us. I know Leslie & Mary, and I know that the accusations made against them here are false.

Posted by: Alison Location: havelock on Feb 14, 2009 at 09:42 AM
Mrs Jordan..I think this is a wonderful thing you are doing! Everyone who sends in for this is doing it on their own free will. I think it is great! I have my own house and know two or three people who could benefit from this. May God bless you and your husband. I know your hearts are in the right place!

Posted by: Honorable Bloggie Location: NC on Feb 14, 2009 at 12:42 AM
Dear AWH: I admit that I am not perfect. According to the Word of God, neither are you or anyone else. We have no way of entering the minds and hearts of our fellow brothers and sisters. The general rule you stated, "people who so quickly suspect others of false motives are often false themselves," is actually reversible. You are right that falsely accusing someone is wrong, but who is to decide whether the accusations are true or false? I am not attempting to further agitate the issue, but I would like to aware the public of the possibility of both sides having faulty reasoning. To be truthful, the only positively secure way of avoiding faulty reasoning is taking a neutral stance, which is what I advocate in this situation. As long as everyone complies with the law, I have no objections. Since there is no obvious way of determining the intentions of one's heart, the moral thing to do would be to refrain from making any judgments about character at all.

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 13, 2009 at 08:27 PM
Ok. You help 1 needy family to get a house for $50 and you take from 2,699 needy families $50 which is money they really need. Is this good or bad?¿? You be the judge.

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 13, 2009 at 08:24 PM
You're selling this way to hard Jo. What's your cut? Also, it's pretty tasteless envoking God's blessing to sell a house. Did Jim and Tammy Baker issue you a real estate license?

Posted by: Jo Location: washington nc on Feb 13, 2009 at 07:39 PM
Your logic is flawed. The final winner is randomly drawn after it is narrowed down; therefore not hand picked. Also if YOU don't try how do you know YOU won't be picked. Also if you are so well off, why not invest in helping a needy family get the house. It is more blessed to give than to receive! Yes it is legal! They checked! Another point for those who have faith in this "contest" $50.00 is all the person needs to send in, no closing fees that which has been taken care of by the Jordans, all the winner needs to do is move in, change the utilities to their own name and forever only pay the taxes which by the way is only approximately $600/yr. (I asked)that's $50/month so JUST GO FOR IT!!! You will only be blessed for it!

Posted by: AWH Location: TC on Feb 13, 2009 at 07:23 PM
Honorable Bloggie: There is no evil in disagreement, but it is evil to falsely accuse others of wrongdoing when there is no evidence to support the accusation ... and that is exactly what has gone on here. Those who have intimated that Leslie and Mary are ONLY promoting their own interest by doing this have accused them of greed and selfishness, and there is no justification for such slander. If you agree with those who have done this, then you are guilty too. When I said those so quick to criticize should look into their own hearts, I meant exactly what I said: As a general rule, people who so quickly suspect others of false motives are often false themselves. As for the plight of those who entered and will not win, the contention that they have been cheated out of $50 or taken advantage of in some way is entirely without basis. The terms of the contest were clear, and the rules simple. Those participating took a chance for a sum they felt comfortable in risking ... plain and simple!

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 13, 2009 at 06:56 PM
It's not really a raffle if you are hand picking the winner instead of drawing for it. Are you selling tickets to everyone? If I own three houses and work for a living and have no chance of your pity, will you still sell me a ticket? Seems these poor people would be better off buying a lottery ticket or paying their rent. IS THIS EVEN LEGAL?

Posted by: Jamie Location: Washington on Feb 13, 2009 at 06:01 PM
How many more entries are needed?

Posted by: Mary Lou Location: Washington on Feb 13, 2009 at 04:42 PM
I have read all the emails and believe me, we do want to give our home to a NEEDY family but of course, we want to get our asking price for the house. Please come out yourself and meet us if you aren't sure. I do get phone calls from people wanting to buy a raffle ticket and say they are willing to pay $100.00 or more. I was advised to charge $100.00 for the entry fee, but I said no because people out of work or on disability would not be able to afford it, and yes we have even gotten letters from people who couldn't afford the $50.00, (which is a one time fee,) but thanked us for restoring their faith in the human race for not trying to get rich but to help someone receive a house. It is going slow but we are sticking to our faith that this will work and someone will get this house. Please feel free to call me, 946-6864. We will have an open house at least 1x a month and that will be announced. Bye for now and God bless all of you. Mary Lou Jordan

Posted by: Jo Location: Washington NC on Feb 13, 2009 at 04:22 PM
As one of the contestants and the first to do so, I agree...that $50 could have used for me and my family a lot of meals. However, I look at it this way: if I win, the Lord and the Jordans and others blessed me with a beautiful home, if I lose I helped another person get a home. Also how many people, poor or rich, spend hundreds of dollars of the NC lottery, lose and get nothing but aggravation and then only continue to throw that money away again and again on the lottery in hopes to win BIG. At least with this a needy family has a chance. In these terrible economic times, I wished more people would have the charitable heart the Jordans do. Quit spending so much time insulting them and dig into your pockets and help someone who is needy get a home! God Bless them! Frankly I will wait until they get all 2700 entries, and if I lose, I will praise God along with the Winner!

Posted by: Honorable Bloggie Location: NC on Feb 13, 2009 at 03:33 PM
"AWH", to disagree is to be evil? That's what's wrong with the world today. You're right, they have every right to sell their home for whatever price they wish. However, I was simply stating my opinion that only those people who wish to donate to charity should take part in this. Since all of the people paying $50 would be in the position to give, there would be less controversy. If the person who wins the house does not need it, he/she simply could give it to a needy family. I'm sure they came up with this idea with good intentions, but their reasoning may have been a little flawed. I'm sure they're good people, and I do not wish for them to see this site and think that we are condemning them. God bless them and I hope that the best comes out of this!

Posted by: huh? on Feb 13, 2009 at 12:45 PM
Those of you supporting this idea seem to be overlooking that there will be 2699 needy families out $50. Maybe $50 isn't much to you, but to them it is several meals! How can you possibly endorse taking money from 2699 needy families to help one???

Posted by: Curious Location: Plymouth on Feb 13, 2009 at 11:58 AM
Gee whiz Deputy Dawg, I sure hope you are'nt a real deputy.Your math kind of sucks.

Posted by: Rachel Location: Greenville on Feb 13, 2009 at 11:36 AM
I think it is a great idea. Why should they not be blessed and also help someone else who needs the help. If they were asking for $50 for a raffle ticket a lot of folks would get in on it. They are not they are asking for foks who need the help. To me it is a great opportunity. Why not help someone write the letter who is in need, why not pay the $50 for them if their funds are extremely tight?

Posted by: Deputy Dawg Location: Tarboro on Feb 13, 2009 at 08:34 AM
2700 x $50.00 is $135,000.00, they say the home is valued at $140,000.00, they may be helping out someone by selling their home for $50.00, but if they get 2700 applicants they will pocket $135,950.00...so I feel like they are doing it for themselves.

Posted by: AWH Location: TC on Feb 13, 2009 at 08:18 AM
Those of you who are criticizing this need to look deep into your own hearts ... because that's where the evil lies! Leslie and Mary have every right to sell their place for the amount they choose, and the amount is fair enough. I know them and I know the property; it's a house, a shop, and a nice lot of land in a good out-of-the-way location. Not only is there nothing wrong with their desire to sell this place for a fair price, but there isn't anything wrong with the way they're doing it, either. It isn't every day that many are given a chance to own a home for the sum of $50 and a demonstrated need. Leslie and Mary didn't have to go to all this trouble, and they shouldn't have to endure the unjustified criticisms of a bunch of do-gooder, holier-than-thou, bench-warming critics who have nothing better to do than come on here and make baseless accusations against good people. If some of you don't like what they're doing, TOO BAD. I'd be ashamed to hurl such muck around. So sad.

Jo..thank you for the update. How many entries do they have so far? ...Leslie and Mary Lou Jordan... I hope this works out just the way you dream. Your story has a fairytale allure.... and a lot of poor people are praying and sending $50.00 for a chance to own a piece of the American Dream. But...there is no way in this world... that I would invite 25 finalists in my home with the intention of telling 24 of those people.."You didn't win, and I still have your money." Of course this isn't a one way thing... The Jordans are getting a hefty some. And While the Jordans are ecstatic because they now have $135,000 ... and someone has a home. There are 24 people in that room who just lost $50.00.... in this hard times... you might need to rethink this. And contact ONLY the winner.

Posted by: This dog smokes Location: Greenville on Feb 13, 2009 at 12:47 AM
This couple is smart. They are trying to help out someone in need and to also gain a fair price for their home. If they are the honest and good people that care to help out someone in need, as they have been mentioned below, then they should own up to their agreed deadline and not try to milk more money out of people.

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 13, 2009 at 12:12 AM
Doublewides are like cars- they depreciate. A used manufactured home is never worth more then $100k. Why would you pay more for an old one, when you can buy a brand new one. And it's not like a stick-built home that you have to wait 6-8 months for construction.

Posted by: Honorable Bloggie Location: NC on Feb 12, 2009 at 11:20 PM
While it's a nice charity project, I don't think a lot of people are in the financial position to donate $50 at this time. "Anonymous", you're right. I thought the same thing when I first heard about it. Brilliant idea, I must say though!

Posted by: Amanda Location: Greenville on Feb 12, 2009 at 10:48 PM
How many entries do they have, also when is the new deadline??

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Washington on Feb 12, 2009 at 09:49 PM
Do the math. 2700 x $50 = $135,000 And they say they are doing this to help someone? Yeah right...Helping themselves.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: washington on Feb 3, 2009 at 10:22 AM
Is this going to be postponed again or do they have enough entries to go forward with this?

Posted by: Jo Location: washington nc on Jan 20, 2009 at 01:39 PM
The deadline is February 15th. 25 people will be finalists. Mary and Leslie will have a party will all 25 on or around March 31st (I am not sure of date) the winner will then be picked at random. All the news media is supposed to be there to announce the winner! I believe in what they are doing also. Please let others know. For people who are needy this is a miracle! . Send the essay to: Leslie and Mary Lou Jordan, P.O. Box 101, Washington NC 27889 or call Jay Martin at the Rich company 945-4231 or the Jordan's phone number is listed in the phone book.

When will people know who was picked, will it be told to everyone who sent in an essay?I think it's great what they are doing.

Have hey checked to determine the legality of this raffle? Gamblers do not have integrity, only greed... If Leslie and Mary think this is OK with the Lord, they need to find an old fashioned altar and repent. The LOVE of money is the root of all evil...

You know it is a shame that even in these times it is hard for people to believe in something good and honest. Obviously those peopl haven't gone through much. I personally applaud the Leslie and Mary and hope that everyone involved gains a blessing from this act.

Send the essay to: Leslie and Mary Lou Jordan, P.O. Box 101, Washington NC 27889. I have spoken with Martin at the Rich company and Mary Lou personally. Everything is on the up and up! You can call Martin at the rich company 945-4231 or the Jordan's phone number is listed in the phone book. Remember the price includes the 1 1/2 acre of land not just the double wide trailer. This is a Godsend for those who cannot afford or won't qualify for a mortgage. I know they will choose the right winner. God Bless them!

Question> WOuld you have to move the home and shop/gameroom if you win? If you did that would be a costly expense as well.

Nice way to sell a home in a staggering economy! It sounds good for anyone with an extra $50 to donate to buying someone else a home. As Lee said, it sounds like a good source for giving charity. :)

I would like to know more about where to send the essay and the money???

I know Leslie and Mary Jordan personally, and I can affirm their intergrity. They wouldn't do anything dishonest, and they won't be cheating anybody. I'm sure they've covered their bases, and that any percieved problems are related to this abbreviated report. Don't be throwing around accusations about folks you don't know. I know 'em, and I'm vouching for them!

Where do you write the essay and where do you send the money?? Who is in charge of this?? They are not doing a very good job. If they wanted this to end well they sure are not off to a good start. How do you even know if the stories are true?? People can make up a horrible story and win and they could already have 3 houses how are the people reading the essays know that people are telling the truth?? EXPLAIN PLEASE!!

There are fliers about this in the Job Link Office. It is a 50$ entrant fee, and if you win the house will cost another 50$. The flier states that if there are not enough entries then money will be refunded.

And we should just trust that those reading and judging the essays will do the honorable thing...

Should not this matter be referred to "Report a Scam"? Can you imagine having to read those essays? P. T. Barnum was right.

This sounds like a ok concept. A couple of questions however. The first is what would happen if they come up short with the money they need to sell (ex. only selling 1,000 entries)? Would they be required to sell to someone after the deadline, regardless? If they did not sell what guarantee do the entrants have getting their money back? This would be a good contest for someone with money that had a extra house, and wanted to donate the entrance fee to a charity.

What is the address? Where do we send the essay? When is the raffle? What is the last day? If they don't get 2700 will you get your money back? If not what will happen if they don't get 2700 essays? How will we know if they get 2700 essays? There is no contact information. Please put more.

Nice going if they can get $135,000 for a depreciated $27,000 double wide.
