McCain: Obama Is A "Decent, Family Man" Save Email Print

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- His backers feeling increasingly confident, Democrat Barack Obama made a slight nod to his Republican rival on Saturday and asked voters to have faith in him as the next president.

Even as he criticized John McCain's economic policies, Obama acknowledged that the GOP nominee has asked his supporters to temper their attacks on him.

"I appreciated his reminder that we can disagree while still being respectful of each other," Obama told thousands of supporters at the first of four outdoor rallies in Philadelphia.

"Sen. McCain has served this country with honor," he said two hours later, in the city's Germantown neighborhood. "He deserves our thanks for that."

At a town-hall event Friday in Minnesota, McCain took the microphone from a woman who said Obama is an Arab. McCain said, "No, ma'am," and he called Obama "a decent, family man."

McCain drew boos at the same event when he told a supporter who expressed fear at the prospect of Obama's election that the Democrat is a "person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States."

Those reassurances aside, McCain's TV ads continue to attack Obama sharply. Some hit his ties to a former radical who co-founded a violent anti-war group in the 1960s. Yet on Saturday at an event in Iowa, McCain didn't mention the past association and focused on their policy disagreements.

Obama referred to the ads Saturday. "We've seen rough stuff on the TV from them," he said. "I can take it for four more weeks," but the nation cannot take "four more years of Bush-McCain economics."

"I will be a president who puts you first," he said, asking voters not to lose hope in the economy before President Bush can be replaced.

Polls show Obama leading in several battleground states, and some of his top surrogates feel victory is nearly in reach.

"The one thing we can't let happen is for us to be overconfident," Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell told donors at a Friday fundraiser, where he introduced Obama.

Although Obama says anything can happen in the campaign's final 24 days, hints of his optimism are creeping into his unscripted remarks.

"In some ways this is a celebratory event" as "we're now coming to the end of what has been a two-year process, an extraordinary journey," Obama said at a second Philadelphia fundraiser Friday night. The host, Comcast executive David L. Cohen, said the two events raised more than $5 million.

As 250 major donors ate beet salad and mahi-mahi under a huge tent, Obama seemed to look ahead to his first term as president.

"We're going to have to make some priorities, we're going to have to cut some things out," he said, referring to expensive goals such as improving health care, schools and college affordability.

"I'm going to be in some fights with my own Democratic Party in getting some of that done," he said.

Defying tradition in GOP-leaning states, he said, he is leading McCain in Montana and North Carolina. His lead in Virginia, which Democrats last carried in 1964, is 6 or 7 percentage points, he told the donors.

Obama added, however: "Who knows what can happen in the next 25 days?"

Democrats have carried Pennsylvania in recent presidential elections, although sometimes narrowly. McCain has campaigned aggressively in the state, but polls show Obama leading.

Democrats usually win huge margins in Philadelphia and try to minimize their losses in the state's smaller cities and more rural areas. Obama's barnstorming of Philadelphia was designed to drive his base's vote as high as possible.

Under a brilliant blue sky, thousands turned out at each spot. In some cases, thousands more were unable to get through the gates. They stood on cars and craned their necks for a glimpse, sometimes blocks away. Crowds cheered Obama's motorcade as it arrived and left each site.

Obama read the same speech each time, but he ad-libbed a bit and seemed increasingly buoyant as the day progressed. Telling his favorite new story about buying pie from a Republican-leaning Ohio diner owner, he joked with a woman who called out from the Germantown crowd.

"You will make me some pie?" he asked. "What kind of pie do you make? Sweet potato pie?"

As the crowd roared, he poured it on. "We're going to have to have a sweet potato pie contest," he said. "I'll be the judge, because I want my sweet potato pie."

This is for Jane : Ma'am, I will readily admit that there have been plenty of soldiers / police officers that have done things to shame their respective uniforms and the people they serve. However, when these people are caught and found to be wrong they are dealt with pretty decisively..and harshly. They are, however, a small minority, and the MAJORITY of our police / military folks serve us with honor, integrity, bravery and sacrifice. These upstanding men and women get just as angry as you do about those in their respective professions that do wrong ..maybe more so. Please remember that thousands of them, military and police, have lost their LIVES serving all of us..and yes, whether you will admit it or not, that includes YOU. I, and I would dare say, they, would respectfully ask that you judge them as individuals..not as a group. Take care.

Touched By An Angel; You are obviously liberal and facts are irrelevant to you. I could present you with irrefutable facts and you would still maintain your position, so I will not spend anymore time addressing you on this. Liberals ALWAYS ignore facts, especially when it doesn't support the way they FEEL. THAT IS A FACT.

Posted by: Touched By An Angel on Oct 14, 2008 at 04:46 PM
To McCain Snake Oil, It depends on how you look at life. If you believe life begins at the time of conception. The Bible actually speak on Abortion In the Ten Commandments, the sixth Commandment says that "You shall not murder" But bear in mind I still think it is the mothers choice to KILL her baby.

Posted by: McCain Snake Oil Co. on Oct 14, 2008 at 03:47 PM
Does the Bible actually speak on Abortion as in actually come out and say abortion is bad? Hate Me is pretty much right.

Posted by: Touched By An Angel on Oct 14, 2008 at 01:56 PM
To VBush, Yes I believe Christ would support Obama, I also believe God knows that the mothers have abortions in order to murder their babies. OK bring me facts that proves otherwise. Don't come back with facts as you see them, I want hard cold facts. I am sick of some of you want to be intelligent people. I know I will be judged some day for what I do, not what the rest of the world does. If you are going to blame any one, then be decent enough to step up to the plate and take some of the blame. All inhabitants of the earth is to blame for mankind's sin. Please don't forget my cold hard facts I ask for. I WILL NOT except anything less. Have a good day

Posted by: Hate Me on Oct 14, 2008 at 12:09 PM
KILLING BABIES! All religion aside, abortion does the world a favor. We have no need for more people on earth, especially unwanted people. I know it's a popular opinion to believe human lives are more important then anything else, and this mindset will probably never go away... but I choose to disagree. We live and die just like any other animal, except we destroy the planet in the process. Pre-emptive answers - no I don't want kids, and yes I could die tomorrow and that would be fine.

Posted by: VBush Location: MHCY on Oct 14, 2008 at 07:10 AM
Touched By An Angel; Do you really think that there is even a remote chance the Christ supports abortion? I do not think Christ would be posting his support for Barrack Obama or any other liberal infanticide supporting politician. That issue alone would pretty much cancel any support from Jesus Christ. So I don't know what 'angel' it is you think you have been touched by unless it was the angel of death.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 14, 2008 at 12:33 AM
You are touched, but by what, I don't know...

Posted by: Touched By An Angel on Oct 13, 2008 at 10:41 PM
I find it so ridiculous that you Republicans would think some one in your life is a great person. When that person does not vote the way you want them to, you turn on them like a wild animal. We witnessed this characteristic even in McCain himself and now we see it in you when you speak about Dean Smith. You know I wonder what you all would do if Christ came on here and said, you know people I am going to vote for Barack Obama. What would you do then, would call him an idiot or would call him a terrorists or would shout out KILL HIM???? "THINK ABOUT IT PEOPLE"

Posted by: alex Location: vanceboro on Oct 13, 2008 at 06:45 PM
decent, friends with a guy who's a confesses unapologetic terrorist, attends a church where the pastor says God ### america, supports the killing of the innocent unborn. yep we need a man like that as our leader!

Posted by: ??? Location: NC on Oct 13, 2008 at 05:38 PM
Boots, I feel much better. And I will feel better still when Republicans have the last laugh when the Demobrats little darling Obama turns out to not be what you all think he is.

Posted by: Obama Snake Oil Co Location: Washington on Oct 13, 2008 at 01:22 PM
I still maintain the fat lady has not gotten on stage; case in point Kerry? Gore? Mondale? All were ahead during the polls on them. Stongly dissagree with that post. We don't care who you are voting on as long as you have done research to see what your canidate represents. We have been posting "factual" info on the canidates rather than "party sheep like answers". Like using the term "McBush", bahhhhhhhh or McPalin bahhh,,,bahhh or 4 more years of Bush, bahhh, bahhhh, its always the same. When we hear you are voting for Obama you tell the rest of us that you want socialist, redistribution of wealth, higher taxes, higher interrest rates, a weak military and you don't need your job. Obama=Carter=disaster

Posted by: Dwayne Location: Greenville on Oct 13, 2008 at 01:18 PM
Each person makes their own decisions and each person must own their decisions. I will be able to sleep knowing that I did not jeopardize my country by voting for an inexperienced senator who is hiding his past.

Posted by: Trucker on Oct 13, 2008 at 12:24 PM
Do you think we don't know why McBush said what he did about Obama?

Posted by: $$$ on Oct 13, 2008 at 12:18 PM
No I think if one could go to the other side and ask a child who was aborted as a baby, I believe he/she would beg to differ that my mom is not decent woman man. YOU need to put blame where it belongs. I see Bush never stooped even one baby from being aborted. You all are blowing nothing but hot air.

Posted by: Dwayne Location: Greenville on Oct 13, 2008 at 11:52 AM
If one could go to the other side and ask a child who was aborted as a baby, I believe he/she would beg to differ that obama is a decent family man. Sen. McCain is exercising professional courtesy. I have no such allegiance.

The problem with republicans they refuse to believe that when we say we are voting for Obama that is who we are voting for on Nov.4th. If there is a silent majority it will make little difference in the out come of the election

Posted by: Obama Snake Oil Co Location: Washington on Oct 13, 2008 at 10:40 AM
Devil Dog, I think the "happy days are here again" song should be spared for now. Just because the liberals post on this site doesn't mean they have the election. Just because the polls are ahead right now doesn't mean they have the election. The silent majority hasn't spoken, ie, the fat lady isn't even on stage. Most of todays problems is the economy. The problem is share holders are getting out and why? They fear the democrats will get into office and control both houses. We all know what that means, Socialist, higher taxes, higher interrest, gutting the military and higher unemployment. Check on the Carter years, thats what happened then too. So, with so much at stake, the silent majority will show to vote in great numbers since so much is at stake. Just because people express on the board doesn't mean they have it "Wrapped Up".

Posted by: ACE on Oct 13, 2008 at 10:12 AM
To Leslie, You know I just don't know what would happen if people tried to actually work together, Working together has never been tried in the history of mankind. You see you always have people that are all to willing to say "I know more than you do" We all know there are not a lot of real smart people around. If there were then we would all know that Politics\Religion "WILL DESTROY MANKIND" I have been coming on here for weeks and can see that no one is the brightest light on the Christmas tree.

Devil Dog , Hope, Sgt Cash, My troops and I want to thank you for your kind words and support.

Posted by: Devil Dog Location: New Bern on Oct 13, 2008 at 09:17 AM
Do you want private enterprise(Capitalism) or big government (Socialism) to manage your affairs? Big government, is controlled by civil service workers, who protect their turf like a pack of "pit bulls". It's almost impossible to fire the incompetent, and easy to promote the inept. Civil Service employees, can start out as a janitor, and eventually get promoted to Department Head. I've seen it happen over and over. If OBAMA wants CHANGE, he will have to fire 1/2 of the government employees in Washington, DC. It won't happen folks.

I appreciate McCain more and more each day. He should not have to trash his opponent's name in order to run for a political office, he should not have to get fighting mad, but instead he should be able to state his position only. Fisty - OK, but not threatening mad. What kind of people are we to put a candidate in that position, why can't we listen to what he says and judge whether he represents what we want and need a candidate to do in office. Disagree vehemently, state his reasons, but he shouldn't have to get mad. I don't think all this campaigning should be necessary, but instead believe strongly that we should look at a candidates past, what he has done and what he has stood for in the past, in order to make a decision on who we vote for. Experience is not a not all that necessary either because when and where and on what a decision is made is always different and the candidates will be surrounded by experts to consult. Thanks

Posted by: Leslie Location: Pitt County on Oct 12, 2008 at 09:52 PM
Wow! Look how much energy has been wasted here on trashing one another. What would happen if people tried to actually work together instead of constantly trying to "one up" each other? It's sad that politics brings out the worst in people instead of the best. Vote your conscience and leave the name calling to the candidates. Enough already

Posted by: Steve Location: Kinston on Oct 12, 2008 at 08:27 PM
Windy---How could you possibly know that Obama grew up poor? Did you grow up with him? Oh, I know--you read his books!!HAR HAR HAR. That reminds me of the time that you liberals bought "The Man From Hope" bull that claimed Clinton lived in poverty and despair during his formative years. I bet Windy even thinks that Michael Moore is a genius truth teller. Wake up and smell the coffee, Windy, or better yet, do a little research before you make some of the statements that you make. You might get a big surprise.

Posted by: Boots on Oct 12, 2008 at 05:53 PM
To ???. You know McCain and Palin took all the fun out of this election. Some of the people on here did a good job of helping them. Do you really think we will sit and take crap and say anything? Some of the things being said by Republicans is uncalled for. So now you had your laugh do you feel better?

Posted by: ??? Location: NC on Oct 12, 2008 at 05:31 PM
Boots, I was just joking. How come all you Demobrats can say whatever you want about McCain but you all are so defensive whenever anything is said about Obama?

Posted by: Jane on Oct 12, 2008 at 05:23 PM
I found out a long time ago that the Military and Law Enforcement will lie like dogs to protect their own. I also know there are horrific crimes committed by both "A FACT" So needless to say I am not impressed by ether one.

Posted by: Windy on Oct 12, 2008 at 04:51 PM
Look people I want to know when you are going to decide that trying to trash Obama will never work and you are wasting your time and money. Obama knows what it is like to be poor he grew up poor, while your man McCain used a woman to gain his wealth. He is very good at using women, just look at Palin and she don't even know she is being used. McCain made her look like a complete fool to most of the world.

Posted by: hope Location: NC on Oct 12, 2008 at 02:28 PM
Thank you Capt. Remington. And to Al, you seem concerned over McCain's speaking skills. Hitler was a good speaker. McCain has many other strengths. The proof is in the pudding. There is no question in my mind who has paid his dues to this country, & subsequently, has earned the right to be our commander in chief. Pretty words contain empty promises. Obama's time will come, he's not quite ready yet.

To Capt.Remington....Way to Stand up and be counted for. I served 3 Combat Tours in Viet Nam(USMC). OBAMA is a lawyer. That should tell you something about his character. Is he going to put a cap on malpractice insurance? NO !! He is going to "SLITHER" and "WAFFLE" like the rest of those politicians. When the going gets tough...the tough get going. This country needs a LEADER not a MANIPULATOR!!!

Some of my troops do want Prisoner of War Senator Navy/McCain to be our Commander and Chief. You have a right to say what you said, but what you said is not fact or based on any truth. Here is a ? Al how do you think OBAMA would have made it in a Communist hell hole prison? Strong/McCain or Weak/Obama? Do you think Obama would have given the Viet Nam Communist. More than Name, Rank or Serial Number.? After they twisted his arm a little?

To Bill, You are a perfect example of millions of republicans, keep up the good work for your party.

Posted by: Devil Dog Location: New Bern on Oct 12, 2008 at 08:06 AM
To Dentist...When the "smoke" clears and Obama becomes PREZ, and the DEMS win in both the House and Senate, everyone WILL pay higher taxes except those eating at the "trough". The republicans will just have to watch the train wreck, because they won't have the ability to filibuster any legislation. I have seen this garbage before,in 1976, when CARTER became PREZ. High taxes, higher spending, liberal judges, more big government and a decrease in military spending. Business owners will lay off people causing high unemployment and interest rates will soar. Both the republican and democratic party's are now basically the same and this country is ripe for SOCIALISM. Why have incentive to better youself, if you know you are feeding those who have bad judgement, poor behavior, no character and keep getting rewarded for doing nothing? I'm at an age where it really doesn't matter to me. I've seen a once great nation go downhill for years and one day our children and grandchildren will wake up.

Show Me The Money. - I am Middle Class Obama tells me. I make just under around $187,000.00 dollars a year. I get a check. I canot wait for my Redistrubition Check if Barack gets elected. It better be in the high 6 figures $195,000.00 a year I don't want to work. I would rather go fishing on my boat with my friends and family. On Nov 5th I am going to send him a self addressed envelope with a new stamp. Liberals seem to have a large appetite for propaganda and don't seem to be able to filter the truth from the lies. Perhaps it's easier to just make up their minds to take a side, and then re-iterate the talking points. The fact is that the Sub Prime crisis was in large part caused by liberal programs, pushed through by the democrats, that forced lending Companies and banks to give loans to people that could not possibly pay them back. Send Barack your check return envelope include a stamp so he won't use our tax money to send them out. Show me the $$$$$. Thank You Decent Man

Unfortuately the biased media wants everyone to believe that Obama has already won. They might be surprised. There are still some intelligent people who can see through him. No, not all of us are entitled to hold any office we want, especially the president of the US. And I think if you ask most military they would rather have a past POW as commander in chief than a person who is "friendly" with terrorists & says they are in Iraq killing innocents. I hope Americans are not stupid enough to elect this guy with NO executive experience. I his run for the presidency is all about him, not his country. He & his wife can't even seem to be proud of this country or say anything positive except how Barack is going to save us all. Yeh right.

AYRE'S FIREBOMBING - John Murtagh, a Republican Yonkers City Councilman who is running for State Senator.Barack Obama's friend tried to kill my family, he said in a statement for the McCain campaign. Murtagh has told the media that Ayers was involved in the February 1970 firebombing of the upper Manhattan home of his father, the late state Supreme Court Justice John M. Murtagh. McCain campaign conference call Friday noted that Barack Obama's wife worked at a Chicago law firm "at the same time as Bernardine Dohrn," a '60s radical and the wife of the unrepentent (and washed up) terrorist Bill Ayers. Obama wanted us to think he was a guy in the neighborhood." I wish OBAMA would just come clean with the American people, and answer questions without the SPIN!!! Now he is targeting low income White people for there vote. Why? Because some.I said SOME low income White people have little education, and are Blank,Blank,Blank, easy prey.See I played by the do not use word rules

I wonder just how much McCain paid the AA to shout bring it to Obama or the little old lady to call Obama an Arab? This upset McCain? When McCain wouldn't even look at Obama in the debates. Don't fall for everything you read, America? All our ancestors builded this country. All of us are entitled to any office that anyone can hold. Give it a break people, 8 years of Bush has made America a Terrorist to some countries. Troops go from one battleground to another. Even if gas is down, who can afford it? People, and I mean people that have worked all their lives are losing their homes. Food is so expensive, even going on diets for the whole family doesn't work. All week the McCain/Palin has been shouting, "Be Afraid of Obama" and now you want Americans to believe that this heartfelt acknowlegement of Obama is a descent citizen is supposed to come truthfully from the heart. Ask any soldier, do you really want a POW to be in charge of the country? A man you can barely hear speak? FAKE!FAKE!

Where are all the comments. Every time I come to this site there is a BUNCH of right-wing rhetoric. Never have seen a decent comment on Obama and NOW even your own candidate has a nickels worth of grace to acknowledge that Obama is a decent man and no one has anything to say in agreement.

Decent Man? your kidding REPUBLICIANS to SAVE BARACKS BROTHER - George Obama, Barach Obama's brother lives in a hut in a ramshackle town of Huruma on the outskirts of Nairobi in Kenya. He is 26 and lives on $12 a year. That is 3 cents a day. His own flesh and blood has turned his back on him so it is up to us, the good people of America, to help this man out. We would also like to point out what a difference a country makes. One of the Obamas was born in America and lives in a million dollar house has made over $20 million in the last three years. George Obama was born in Africa, lives in hut and makes only 1 dollar a month. He needs a hand up and with our help we are going to give it to him. Barack has not and never helped his brother out of poverty. Thanks Bro. Pray For George.
