The global economic turmoil and the energy crisis were certainly a part of the discussion at Tuesday's debate in Nashville, Tennessee.

Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain squared off in their second debate with the economic meltdown the top concern among voters.

Obama said, "We are in the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. This is final verdict on the failed economic policies of the last eight years."

McCain talked up energy independence.

McCain said "Americans are angry, they're upset, and they're a little fearful."

The town-hall format at Belmont University allowed voters to ask questions while NBC's Tom Brokaw moderated. The candidates' third and last debate will be Oct. 15 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.

Obama held the lead in the polls heading into the debate. His backers hoped the town hall-style face-off could cement his position. A number of Republicans say John McCain has to reverse recent trends by showing voters he has solutions to the nation's economic troubles.

Don't get too "excited" about that. The polls don't reflect the "true" voter in American. You have heard of us, the silent majority. We are democrat, republican and independent, we believe in god and country, morals do mater and honesty is critical. These are all the things Obama is not. We are the ones that voted for the current houses and the ones getting ready to change that too. And, since you may doubt that, NC has been a red state for over 30 years. You can research that pretty easily. Its not a racist thing, its about the "individuals belief". I read Obamas book and that is why I am not voting for him. What did you do?, go to moveon for your daily dose of koolaid. I understand Lavon has some in the fridge, just email her. She gave some to Boots and Little woman. They all feel better today! We can all tell by their posts.

To Obama 08 4 Prez: You said in your post on 10/9/08 at 3:32 a.m. that "a racist is hiding amongst us". Of all the posts that came before that particular post I had not read any comments in opposition of Obama that was racially motivated. People did question his loyalty to America, and people did question his experience/credentials. But, none of that has to do with race, and then you claim there is "a fox in the henhouse....a racist amongst us." That's the race card that I was speaking of that didn't have any merit. Read others' comments for what they say; not for what you take out of them.
