Obama, McCain Argue Over War, Taxes In First Debate Save Email Print
Posted: 6:22 AM Sep 27, 2008
Last Updated: 6:22 AM Sep 27, 2008

A | A | A

In a faceoff that returned again and again to judgment, John McCain portrayed himself as a battle-tested elder running against a naive rookie, while Barack Obama suggested the Republican is a hothead who made the wrong choices on the Iraq war, corporate taxes and more.

Now they take the themes from an intense first debate back to the campaign trail, looking for some edge in a tight presidential race. With 38 days left, McCain is headed for Washington and the dispute over a Wall Street bailout, while Obama plans to visit Republican-leaning states where the Democrat thinks he can make inroads.

The debate presented a huge opportunity for the candidates to deliver their message to millions of Americans — or make an embarrassing blunder.

Interest in Friday's debate was amplified by suspense about whether it would even take place. McCain had said he wouldn't take part unless the financial crisis was resolved, then reversed course and decided at the last minute to participate without a deal.

McCain, 72, frequently referred to his age and experience.

Sometimes he joked — at one point he waggled his eyebrows and quipped that the moderator didn't think he could hear the question — and other times he went out of his way to mention the foreign countries he has visited and the years he has spent on Capitol Hill.

"I have a long record and the American people know me very well," he said.

But Obama, a 47-year-old serving his first term in the Senate, challenged McCain frequently and offered himself as someone who can be trusted to make sound choices.

Obama noted that he opposed invading Iraq, while McCain supported it. He said McCain has voted with the unpopular President Bush 90 percent of the time. He argued McCain backs corporate tax breaks and lax regulation that have contributed to the Wall Street economic crisis.

"We have to recognize that this is a final verdict on eight years of failed economic policies promoted by George Bush, supported by Senator McCain," Obama said.

Obama sought to connect with voters who might have doubts about a relative newcomer to national politics, a black man with an exotic name and background. He talked often about the struggles of ordinary Americans — "the nurse, the teacher, the police officer who, frankly, at the end of each month they've got a little financial crisis going on."

In a long exchange with McCain over the Iraq war, Obama tried to avoid being seen as soft or reluctant to use force when necessary.

An early opponent of invading Iraq, he stressed that his position was prompted partly by worries that it would distract from hunting down Osama bin Laden, and he said withdrawing from Iraq now would free up resources to re-energize that hunt.

Obama suggested McCain might overreact to national emergencies, noting that the Arizona senator has talked about "extinction" for North Korea and joked about bombing Iran.

McCain accused Obama of seeking to "snatch defeat from the jaws of victory" in Iraq. He said the "surge" of U.S. troops has reduced violence there and withdrawing would destabilize the country and the entire region.

Asked what lessons he had learned from the long war, McCain said, "that you cannot have a failed strategy that will then cause you to nearly lose a conflict."

On Iraq and many other issues, McCain said Obama was naive, experienced, confused. He criticized Obama for saying he would meet with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad without precondition. "This is dangerous. It isn't just naive; it's dangerous," McCain said.

The two bickered at times, talking over one another and throwing accusations of twisted words and false statements. But Obama sometimes acknowledged agreements with McCain — concessions that might reinforce Obama's claim to be a politician who can find common ground and reduce confrontation in Washington.

The stakes were high as the two rivals walked on stage. The polls gave Obama a modest lead and indicated he was viewed more favorably than his rival when it came to dealing with the economy. But the same surveys show McCain favored by far on foreign policy.

The candidates stood behind identical wooden lecterns on stage at the performing arts center at the University of Mississippi for the first of three scheduled debates with less than six weeks remaining until Election Day. The two vice presidential candidates will meet next week for their only debate, and Obama and McCain each put in a plug for his own running mate.

But there was a difference: Democrat Joe Biden made the round of post-debate television shows. NBC and CNN said they invited McCain's running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who has granted only three interviews since joining the ticket a month ago, but she declined.

Moderator Jim Lehrer's opening question concerned the economic crisis. While neither man committed to supporting bailout legislation taking shape in Congress, they readily agreed lawmakers must take action to prevent millions of Americans from losing their jobs and their homes.

Both also said they were pleased that lawmakers in both parties were negotiating on a compromise.

Neither could offer specifics about how the potential $700 billion price tag of a Wall Street bailout might affect their ability to implement all the campaign promises they've made.

McCain jabbed at Obama, who he said has requested millions of dollars in pork barrel spending, including some after he began running for president. As he does frequently, the Republican vowed to veto any lawmaker's pork barrel project that reaches his desk in the White House.

McCain said a freeze on most government spending was worth considering, except for veterans, defense and "some other vital issues."

Obama said the problem with that was that some programs needed more money. He mentioned early childhood education as an example.

"The problem with a spending freeze is you're using a hatchet where you need a scalpel," he said.

The presidential hopefuls are scheduled to debate twice more, at Belmont University in Nashville on Oct. 7 and at Hofstra University in Hempsted, N.Y., on Oct. 15.

No it is not great that you are voting for Palin

Posted by: Obama Snake Oil Co Location: Washington on Oct 1, 2008 at 02:55 PM
Kitty, that is not a fact. First, I have posted facts from Fox, CBS, CNN, ABC and NBC. I do not got to moveon.org for anything. I don't trust Snopes either. I have notices several others posting from neutral sites and you still call it garbage. Truth is not garbage. Yet you have not established a credible fact to support your facts. Secondly, racist? Nice try, no, Obama is a liberal, a socialist from ties to people that scare the hell out of me. I would vote for Condy or Colin in a heartbeat, they are moderate "like me". I also wonder who has been telling us how to vote? This means your way or no way. Freedom is guarenteed in America under the current admin. I am not sure if it is under....your Obama. By the way, this democrat is voting for a woman for vp this year. Isn't that great? What a great leader she will be with John McCain. Obama or Kerry, they just don't get it and I approve this message.

To Obama Snake Oil, You don't even agree with your own candidate let alone your own party. If you agreed with your candidate you would not have so much to say. Not even McBush bashes US as much as you do on here do. YOU read every bit of trash on the internet and post it in here as the "unquestionable truth" It is people like you that feeds hate in America. It is people like YOU that keeps the BLACK\WHITE issue going buy passing it from generation to generation. I hope that one day people like YOU will become a thing of the past. YOU need to get a life and stop telling others how to live their life, including how they vote.

I guess this is more of the same; Islamic ties, ties to Wright a racist, Pfleiger a racist, Ayers a terrorist and Rezio a felon. What strange bed fellows. More of the same; liberals don't care about his background, they ignore it. Yet liberals post the same old on this site: McBush, Bush lied, Bush started the war, Bush caused the mortgage crisis and Bush is in the pocket of big oil. Yet, not a single fact to support any of this so doesn't that make it a lie? Just because Obama quit his church doesn't mean I buy into it. This democrat is voting McCain and Palin. Sorry, they are the "cleanest" canidates. By the way, moveon is not a reliable source. If you did you would know that the democrats are why the mortgage crisis is here. You would know that Bush tried "repeatedly" to get congress to clean it up and you would know that Bill Clinton's security adviser convinced Bush and both houses to go to war. Its called facts.

Truth hurts , doesnt it?

Does any one besides me notice how the republicans on here just question other peoples comments BUT never have much of an input? If they have a comment it is the same one they have used for weeks. They change a word or two and post it again "MORE OF THE SAME" That must be a republican thing "MORE OF THE SAME". If they said something once they have said it a hundred times. That is sad to say something over and over like that. Why do they post web sites for people to go read, we all have Google. We can all look information up for our self. I don't read much trash on the internet myself. I get my information from a very reliable source.

Lavon, how do you figure that voting for Obama is in the best interest of this country. He doesnt have enough experience for such a big job.He doesnt have the morals for the job. Also, be really honest with yourself, ARE YOU REALLY 100 % SURE THERE ARE NO ISLAMIC TIES? Or are you just going on what you have been told just like the rest of us? Have you ever checked Obama's voting record? He didnt even vote in many of the issues because he was undecided. Is that the kind of leader we need , that is undecided when America is under attack, so does nothing. Wake Up!That Obama is in the best interest for this country is YOUR OPINION. And you know what they say about opinions.

Posted by: West of Ktown Location: NC on Sep 30, 2008 at 03:31 PM
Lavon, I am not voting for obama, not because he is half black, but because he doesnt have the same priorities that I do. 1. He believes in abortion,2. He believes in gay marriages,3. As obama is a Democrat, I really dont feel thta he will have my best interest in mind. However, I would vote for Colin powell or Condeleeza Rice. Last time I looked they were more Black than Obama.Would you vote for either because they are Black?

Posted by: Obama Snake Oil Co Location: Washington on Sep 30, 2008 at 11:28 AM
Hey Rick, are you going to confuse the liberals with the facts and truth? That system overload will make them go to moveon for guidance, you know, the religion. Most of us are aware of this. Now that the problem reached a climax, they don't want to get involved since it is an election year. They would rather blame it on Bush as the cause of all evils the democrats cause. We aren't supposed to be that smart, look up facts and truth. We are supposed to go to liberal web sites where we can get plenty of its not my fault and feel good. Its always Bush's fault, even Nancy Pelosi, tried to do that yesterday. This just shows how arrogant she is in time of emergency on mainstreet. There will plenty of new faces this year in both houses and the white house, Obama and Biden are not part of it.

All of your brainwashed Democrats, Lavon in particular, watch this video and see who covered up the pending housing crisis back in 2004 when Republicans tried to bring it to light. Democrats caused this with the collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which caused the problems we're having now. Their CEO at the time, Frank Raines, was falsifying their records so he could get his bonuses. The Democrats are using their media outlets to slam Republicans when they had a large part in causing this all the while...and that's a fact. BWAHAHAHAHAWWWW!!!!! The video you need to watch is the one entitled Naked Emperor News. It is very enlightening and has actual footage from CSPAN. It even has your beloved Bill Clinton talking about the needed oversight for the companies in a recent interview. Don't cut if off early because you are finally hearing the truth, now. BWAHAHAHAHAWWWW!!!!! http://www.talk2rusty.com/rustytv.html

Hey west of ktown: West East Norh or South. Kinston is still a slum town no matter what side you live on. But anyway I could care less about what reverend says what. I have my own mind and the one thing I cannot understand is that people like you that claim to love america and claim to be so patriotic rather vote against the best interest of this country than to vote for a black man. Thats whats typical kinstonian. I could care less that your voting for Mccain. You need to realize that this is not a communist country where you make people vote for who you want them to vote for. You can't take away peoples right to vote. Let the american people have their say on nov 4th. Your Muslim "Barak Hussein Obama" scare tactic wont work so stop it!!

Posted by: West of Ktown Location: NC on Sep 29, 2008 at 10:30 PM
Lavon you are a typical Kinstonian, a lot of talk about a subject you really dont understand.I work with a lot of AfricanAmericans, and I hear them speak of who Reverend SoandSo says on Sunday is the best choice. And you can not honestly say that they are not influenced by it.

Need proof of Obama's Islamic ties, go to Israelinsider and look at the photo being held up by Obama's half brother Malik of him and Obama in Muslim clothing and read what he said," that despite Obama's Muslim background, that he (Obama) would be friendly towards Israel".Why would Malik have any reason to lie about this? Obama supporters just do not want to face the truth. But hey, its only Americans and American childrens safety and security on the line.So go ahead and cast that vote with a clear conciense.Just remember, IF you are wrong, American blood be on your hands . Its your choice. THINK!!!!

Remeber National Security on election day. Are you 100% sure that Obama has no ties to Islam? He says no, but he has lied about everything else, so why should we believe him on this issue?

To Lavon, thank you for thinking the same way as I did when I read Sally's ignorant comment :)

You know the one thing that repubs can't stand. They can control spin on television, they can control spin on the economy, but the one thing you can't control is the voting booths on november 4th..

Posted by: Lavon Location: kinston on Sep 29, 2008 at 09:05 PM
Blacks are being told to vote for Obama?? Thats got to be near the top of the list of one f the most ignorant posts i've seen here.So sally are the whites being told to vote for Obama also?? Lol!! Your foolish statement is one of the reasons why the republican party is completely dismantled. You wanna talk about feeling sorry, I can bet you any amount of money John Mccain is feeling sorry that he chose Palin for his VP running mate. Lol!!! I guess if Obama was white than blacks would be voting for Mccain right HAHAHAAAAAA!!!!! You can't be an adult saying nonsense like this. I would expect statements like yours to come from a middle school child

Posted by: Little Woman on Sep 29, 2008 at 08:58 PM
To Sally, That is the dumbest thing I ever heard anyone say on here. I am not black but I still think your comment is as dumb as HELL. Just how long did it take you to think that comment up?

Posted by: sally Location: Washington on Sep 29, 2008 at 07:05 PM
I agree with John, Mount Olive, the blacks are being told to vote for Obama because he is half black. So, they will do that but they will be sorry because he does not know enough to be president.

Posted by: Trucker on Sep 29, 2008 at 06:56 PM
WOW I am so glad that ridiculous bailout plan Bush cooked up failed. I could come up with a better plan that myself.

Hey Red State you might want to change your name to blue state because NC is going blue in 36 days.....BWAHAHAHAHAWWWW!!!!!

Oh how when the end gets near people start to show their true colors...LOL. Whether it be desperation or panic. This is so new to a lot of you....you can't handle it. Like I said before..this is no problem for me because I've only had white man against white man to choose from. No matter how confident you try to be we see it. It's that little glimmer of hope you attach yourself to. Do you think if you talk down about Obama it will convince us or you that he will loose? LOL November there will be a day of reckoning. In this story the black man doesn't die first. The man that is half white and half black will unite us as one and McShame will go into a nursing home. But you guys don't give up, I'll give you that.

To @@@ - honey, you might want to scratch a little deeper than the surface if you want to start lecturing people in public. I never said that McCain built the business, but his father-in-law certainly did. It was Cindy McCain's father who started the beer distributorship that has earned the family considerable wealth. He passed it down to his daughter, who is now married to Sen. McCain. John McCain actually signed a pre-nup when he married Cindy, so most of the houses aren't even his. They're hers. Got it? Furthermore, when he was asked about them, he never said he didn't know how many he owned. He said he'd have his staff get back to the reporter. Trying not to sound like a braggart (foreign concept to liberals, I know), he deferred the question of his family's wealth as it was then and is now not relevant to the campaign. As for Obama, he didn't dump his wife to get his home. He just got her hospital millions in taxpayer $, thereby getting her a 150% raise so they could afford it.

Posted by: Red State Location: Washington Co. on Sep 29, 2008 at 04:45 PM
Mashed Taters - Happy to tell you exactly how I really feel. Unfortunately, you have not been quite as clear. "Talking like a ------"? Like a what? Are you implying that only ------ (whatever that is) live in the ghetto? Only ------ are poor. Only ------ are aggressive in their tone when being opposed? Exactly what do you mean? Obama was on the defensive, attacking, interrupting McCain, pointing his finger, shaking his head, and looked genuinely aggrevated and frustrated. In other words, unpresidential. He also has a way of speaking in a clipped, slang type of way when he's trying to connect with commoners. In other words, ghetto speak. Get over yourself and maybe you'll stop seeing a racial bias in everything you read.

Posted by: lavon Location: kinston on Sep 29, 2008 at 04:27 PM
Dow drops 700 points, the economy has nearly tanked, thousands of job losses, skyrocketing gas prices, and it's all been done under a republican admistration. Boy I gotta give it to you repubs, you'll go down in the history books for this one. George bush's tax cuts hard at work. CAN YOU DIG IT???

Posted by: ??? Location: NC on Sep 29, 2008 at 04:23 PM
Wel everyone hollered that Bush didnt serve active duty and he sent troops to war. They cried that Dan Quayle was a draft dodger. So the way I see it , if McCain sends any troops to war, #1the military is a all volunteer military now, they knew the deal when they signed on the dotted line ,#2If McCain does send troops to war, at least we will have someone in office that has experienced war and knows what it is like and is not sending anyone to do anything that he has not done before. #3 What the heck has Obama done except to sit home and stir up racial trouble in Chicago, kiss up to Richard Daley , And generally run down any effort to try to keep this country safe.He kinda reminds me of Hanoi Jane Fonda. How any vietnam vet can supporthim is beyond me, but they are entitled to thier opinion.Just remember that AMERICAS security is on the line when you push that button in the voting booth.

POST EDITED

TO Red State, McCain never came home from a war with nothing and built a business from the ground up. He left his first wife and I don't think I need to paint you a picture do I? Tell the D**N story the way it goes, WE don't like being told lies by you. We know about Obama's house and we know he did not dump his wife to get his home.

RUSSIA is moving quickly to help VENEZUELA and other dictatorial regimes. We better not lose sight of that, and maintain a strong military. Don't forget, military bases employ thousands of CIVILIANS who add alot to this economy in the manufacturing sector. Nikita Khruschev once said, "We will bury you". We need a LEADER not a MANAGER in November.

Posted by: Mashed Taters on Sep 29, 2008 at 03:49 PM
Red State tell us how you really feel. Obama never took on a "ghetto tone" during the debate, he just assertively defended himself against his opponents claims as any politician would. You might as well have said he started talking like a ------. Besides I'd say that observation isn't on-point in any way considering all the positive reviews of Obama's speaking ability (even from Republicans). It's a shame so many folks around here still think like you do.

Posted by: Red State Location: Washington Co. on Sep 29, 2008 at 03:23 PM
James - jealous much? Why does it bother you that McCain's and his wife own 7 houses? In my America, its a good thing that a man can come home from a war with nothing and build a business from the ground up, become successful and pass that along to his children. In fact, its also encouraged and celebrated when a mixed race man from Hawaii and a black girl from southside Chicago grow up and graduate from Ivy League schools, become successful and buy themselves a house at just under $2 million (albeit with the help of a convicted felon). So, one last time, McCain and Obama are both very rich as compared to the average family in America. In fact, Obama is embarrassingly rich as compared to his half-brother who lives in a hut on $12 a year. So, set aside your jealousy. You could have done the same thing.

Posted by: James Location: Greenville on Sep 29, 2008 at 01:52 PM
The candidate with seven houses less than the other one is naive and unrealistic. I'll be sure to write that down.

Posted by: Red State Location: Washington Co. on Sep 29, 2008 at 01:03 PM
I also wanted to address two other previous comments. First, "if Obama were white", he would not even be in this race. No way in heck a white man or especially a Republican would be given the free pass he has been given on his past actions and associations. The lame stream media has basically said that its just a cultural difference that whitey doesn't understand. The hateful rhetoric of his holy associations, his involvement with ACORN and the terrorist Ayers and the criminal Rezko, the very unpresidential ghetto tone that he takes when someone opposes or disagrees with him is completely overlooked. And speaking of the bracelet he wore with the soldiers name that he could not remember - that soldiers mother has asked Obama to stop wearing the bracelet and not to mention her son's name in any more campaign speeches. How nice of him to accomodate her wishes not to have her son's death used to further his ambitions. Oh, he hasn't has he?

Posted by: Red State Location: Washington Co. on Sep 29, 2008 at 12:49 PM
To be honest, I think Obama was the best I've ever seen him without a teleprompter. He usually stutters and stammers very badly when having to answer questions off the cuff and can't think fast on his feet. In that regard, he did well. On the economy, Obama remembered his talking points better than McCain and was more succinct, but its comparing apples to oranges. It comes down to conservative free market principles compared to liberal socialist principles. I go for the former. The foreign policy section was clearly a win for McCain. It a contrast in deep and wide. Obama demonstrated that he has obtained a broad base of knowledge about foreign affairs. It's something that can be picked up if you have a year and a half campaigning with 300 foreign policy advisors. McCain proved that he has a depth of experience in the world that you just can't fake. He is tough, but able to compromise when necessary. Obama is simply naive and unrealistic about threats we face.

To hope, All I have to say is if my husband had eight or ten houses I sure the HELL know it. McBush is no warrior and never was. I have saw him talk about his life many time and he spent his life as a trouble maker and ever brags about the fact. You have to be an imbecile not to see he is still a trouble maker. "OLD MEN HAS OLD WAYS" McBush lives in the past just like all old men do. "THAT MEANS MORE OF THE SAME" Only a lire and a coward looks away from his enemy, even animals look in each others eyes while in an engagement. YOU call McBush a warrior, that is a joke lol.

To John..PREJUDICE means one makes opinions and judgements before knowing a person. Maybe RACIST is a better term? I don't believe in SOCIALISM, and I'm sorry to say neither party believes in CAPITALISM anymore. In today's society of grab for all the "freebies" you can get, at the expense of others, was born in 1964. People will vote based on which party can market their philosophy. Now, I see why politicians have political immunity and lying is acceptable. Until people get educated, and involved in politics, nothing will change. One problem in today's financial bebacle is the repeal of the GLASS-SEGAL Act of 1933. This happened in 1999. This allowed banks and investment firms to merge. I bet this will be looked at again. Extreme GREED, from the indivdual to the top, is to blame. You are now seeing high powered politics at it's worst. It's one thing for a person to make alot of money, but the way they FLAUNT it is unacceptable. It's makes me sick!

LOL@John....."IF" I were trying to fool myself, I would have never wrote the post. It was actually a wake up call for those other that are asleep. If Obama was white I would absolutely be voting for him, and as you copied and pasted my words I hope you understood that I think..... so would more of the population. Yes I do think some people will solely vote for Obama because he is half black, and I think Obama will lose votes for that same reason. That in itself does not change the way I vote. If I voted on color alone.......I would NEVER have casted a vote since I'm a black woman. I have voted since I was 18 years old, and guess what?.....there hasn't been a black candidate before now! So your theory or lack of is absolute rubbish. My vote has never been about race or sex since all I've had to choose from is white male/white male. Have a great Monday.

Obama 08 4 Prez wrote; "If Obama was white this whole race would be over for the Republicans. He would be leading by 30 points. Amazing in this day an age people still can't get past their PREJUDICE,". My question to you is; If he were white, would you still be voting for him? I find it strange that 95% of blacks are voting for him only because of his politics! You may be fooling yourself, but we all know the real truth.

Posted by: Rick Location: Greenville on Sep 29, 2008 at 09:27 AM
@@@, we pay enough taxes. If the democrats wouldn't have jump-started the mortgage crisis by making companies lend to underqualified buyers our economy would be fine. A tax increase isn't the answer. You can't increase taxes on a business owner and expect them to still be able to pay their employees. These "big, evil" business owners that Obama wants to raise taxes on are the ones who help our economy by employing workers. If we raise taxes on them they may look at going to other countries, where taxes are less, to operate and take even more jobs from American soil. Just wait and see.

To WITN: Its easy to see WITN is in the tank for Obama or at least the writer of this story is. I had thought higher of WITN than this. The writer of this story clearly is writing with a slant towards Obama. Its okay to be in support of Obama, but a writer must be objective in their stories and this story clearly is not.I would hope WITN could select better journalist than this.

Obama is known for his eloquent speaking ability, possibly one of his only strengths. That he couldn't get McCains name right at such a key moment in his career is something to take note of. As for how many houses McCain has, that is Cindy's business, and is irrelevant. McCain is a warrior, & will expose the corruption in government, and will name them. He has earned his stripes.

Posted by: Little Woman on Sep 29, 2008 at 08:48 AM
Well McBush was looking away from Obama the entire debate and Obama may not have known who he was talking to. Look people call other people by the wrong name all the time, get over it.I know it is easy to use the wrong names while talking to some one "BUT HOW THE HELL DO FORGET SOMETHING AS BIG AS A HOUSE?" It is better to forget a name than forget how many homes you own. Speaking of his homes, I wonder if any of his homes have ever been foreclosed on like so many middle class peoples homes have been or will be.

To Rick. So you are voting for McCain because YOU don't want to pay taxes. How does it feel to let the country go to hell because YOU are voting for McCain to keep from paying capital gains tax along with other tax lmao

That's fine Little Woman, there is still enough BS to not vote for McCain. Like this....in the 90 minute debate how many times did McCain mention the middle or working class....zero! How many times did McCain look at Obama...zero! McCain said he was going to look out for the veterans....but said the G.I. bill was "too generous". McCain is erratic and does not have the clout within his own party (not to mention the majority party) to maintain financial stability. His demeanor is that of a bully and will only incite more negative sentiment toward Americans. McCain's shown a marked inability to keep up with current events, technological trends (e-mail? Internet?), or even politics (preconditioned meetings), and that really casts him in a dangerous light. McCain only believes in two kinds of people, rich and poor. During the debate, he said he believes in 2 tax brackets....lets just read into what that means......Obama has NOTHING to worry about!

Posted by: Rick Location: Anonymous on Sep 28, 2008 at 09:17 PM
I agree with you, Anonymous, about McCain and the eye contact thing. I also thought he and his wife could have shown a little more courtesy when Obama and his wife came over to him at the end to shake hands. Don't get me wrong...I'm still voting for him because I have investment properties and don't want Obama's 40% capital gains tax along with other tax increases that might follow. If it weren't for these things I'd probably lean towards him. Sorry, $$$, I got tired of the LMAO thing and snapped.

Posted by: Little Woman on Sep 28, 2008 at 06:42 PM
To Obama 08 4 Prez!, I think I have to disagree with you for the first time ever. I think Obama held his own very well . As for him saying he agreed with McCain so much I think it made him stand above McCain in character and it showed he was able to say look I am not always right. That is something I will never hear McCain do, admit he is wrong about something.

Posted by: Obama 08 4 Prez! on Sep 28, 2008 at 05:39 PM
To:Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 28, 2008....Yes, it bothered me also. Even when you watch Animal Planet it is known that eye contact shows authority, leadership, strength, and aggression. I feel like McCain lost his cool and acted in anger......I felt Obama acted to soft and came off like a boy. I was very disappointed with both men. Imagine, out of everyone in the USA these 4 people are the best we have to offer. No matter who is elected, this will be 4 hard years. It took more than 4 years for America to get in the shape we are in now, it will take more than 4 years and 2 people to get us out...especially if congress is still the same. I don't sit here and try to fool myself with ideals of grander about Obama, I just think McCain is from the old world who believes the old way...and that way doesn't work. Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results! Not one of my post has ever tried to sway someone to Obama's side...we are truly free!

To anonymous..When warriors go into battle (debate)you take the event seriously and try to get an advantage. I want someone who will not be afraid to identify bad actors ,regardless of political party. Everyone in CONGRESS knows he will do that, and they are timid. Presidential politics is a contact sport.

Unfortunately, there a LOT of people who don't pay any attention to comments, policy, or intelligence. They just want "somebody like me". How do you think Bush got elected twice. It's those same people that will vote for Palin. I don't want somebody "just like me" to be the president. I want somebody smarter and more capable than I am. I want the brightest person in the country to be president. Unfortunately, that view seems to be in the minority. Oh and one superficial comment, Obama wore a lapel flag pin, McCain did not. Wasn't Obama criticized for not wearing a lapel flag pin? I wonder if McCain will be......?

Also,BIDEN had to renounce his own "plagarism" problems. I don't boast about my military accomplishments and never will. However, I proudly and honorably served this great country for 21 years. I would do it all over again! Those who deal in fiction, rather than fact, normally gets lost in the schuffle. The ship left the port and I'm sorry you missed it. Hang in there. So that says very little for the Navy, My son was in Navy during the Gulf war, so I do know a lot about the Navy. I saw McBush's tell his life story before the debate other night, he said his DAD was an alcoholic. McCain 08 for president. Obama only has a big mouth with nothing to back it. McCain knows what he is talking about. Like Tom said, you will be sorry if you vote for him and he wins. If this happens, you will see and all of you Obama people will eat you words and be very sorry.

Posted by: Devil Dog Location: New Bern on Sep 28, 2008 at 08:29 AM
Voters watching these debates should look at McCAIN, a Naval Academy graduate, and OBAMA, an IVY league school graduate and a constitutional lawyer, as to who is the LEADER. McCain will always look grumpy because of his military education and experiences. Believe me, his father was the same way as Admiral of the 7th Fleet. Obama will always look like a scholar and lawyer. The issue is... who has the guts to tangle with CONGRESS?

Posted by: EXPERIENCE NEEDED Location: USA on Sep 28, 2008 at 12:18 AM
You know what gets me are all the ppl that are willing to vote for a candidate that has in no way proven himself. Obama doesn't have a proven record to stand on or the experience to handle enemies such as the USA has. Anyone can learn history and have advisors give them great answers to use but experience speaks for itself. I'm not saying that in a few years Obama wouldn't make a good president just that he doesn't have what it takes to do it now. He needs to "pay his dues" so to speak. He needs a good solid back ground and he doesn't have that yet. I will vote for McCain b/c he's proven himself time and time again. Were Obama to have the experience to back him that McCain has, would i vote for him....very likely..but he doesn't. This country needs a strong proven leader commander-in-chief not an unschooled man such as Obama. Let him come back in a few years after he's been around the block a few times. He has alot to learn and there are great ppl for him to learn from.

Posted by: Obama 08 4 Prez! on Sep 27, 2008 at 11:00 PM
Rick you have no argument from me there. Except I want to make it clear that I'm voting for Obama because I think he is the lesser of two evils. Not because I think he is a great candidate, I just think he is better than McCain. When I compared what they both stood for on issues, I felt Obama was more for the working poor. I hear a lot about the middle class, but to be honest...most people I know live from check to check which qualifies them as working poor. And there is no doubt in my mind that Hillary would have taken John out. McCain would have been sick this morning...and last night's debate would have been like watching Ali and a chicken box. Reporters would have been laughing and telling Hillary to "let him up". Unlike most on this blog..I know my canidate...I ALWAYS say that. I don't blow him up to be this super war hero that is better than Jesus. To err is human, to forgive divine. Does Obama lie..sure! Does McCain....of course not LOLOLOL!

Posted by: Rick Location: Greenville on Sep 27, 2008 at 09:33 PM
Obama 08. I appreciate your honesty but Obama would not be your nominee if he wasn't half black. That has been a large part of his appeal and is why he beat out Hillary. He certainly doesn't have experience or a record behind him to garner support just a novelty. If he wasn't half black, as you pointed out, he wouldn't be your nominee and you'd be voting for McCain because Hillary would have smoked him.

Posted by: Obama 08 4 Prez! on Sep 27, 2008 at 09:12 PM
Let me clean up my statement just a little. What I'm trying to get across is......there are going to be people that have never voted before and they are going to vote for Obama simply because he is half black. But there are going to prejudice Democrats that are going to vote republican because of the same reason. I feel that being "half black" is a stumbling block for him, no matter what the polls say. I feel if he was white, McCain would be dust in the wind. This is just my opinion. I am a strong woman, but I to am prejudice. If Hillary would have been the democratic nominee I would have voted republican. I think women are too emotional. When I saw Hillary cry on TV, I knew she had lost. McCain turned me off with Palin. AGAIN....this is MY OPINION!

Those who choose McCain prepare your sons daughters neices and nephews for combat because he is ready to fight. Lets do what bush did sell you fear sell you protection just to give it up. Remember the ports he was trying to sell off. His party thought he lost his (deleted) mind. So if you vote for McCain so have you War or Peace, or War & peace you can only have one. You pick your future. Don't complain when it's not everything you expected it to be.

Amazing in this day an age people still can't get past their PREJUDICES and see that another 4 years of the Republicans running the country into the ground is what they will get with McCain. Guess there is no limit on stupid…some people voted for Bush TWICE....wake up by Nov. 4th! McCain is ALL MOUTH & ALL WAR no NO BRAINS. OBAMA should gain ground when McCain is sinking fast. If McCain comes out on top in November it will be because of one of two reasons: race or cheating. In either case we should be hanging our heads in shame. I hope this time we see a clean election! The best man for the job is Obama, whether bigots or hard line republicans see the truth or not. McCain was about to have a meltdown last night, he couldn't even look Obama in the face. I see the US getting bluer and bluer. McCain lost it last night, don't take my word for it.....and why is Palin..MIA?

I think Senator Obama faired slightly higher on economics, but Senator McCain CRUSHED on national security. This gives Senator McCain a slight victory in the debate. Two issues that rubbed me the wrong way: 1-- Senator Obama kept referring to Senator McCain as "JOHN" I think the Senator earned the right to be referred to as Senator McCain (which he has earned after 26 years). 2-- When the Senator tried to Match Senator McCain by acknowledging that he also wears a BRACELET of a FALLEN SOLDIER but had to pause and stuttered to read the name of that FALLEN SOLDIER. I feel Senator owes that mother an apology. Not knowing and remembering the name and talking down to Senator McCain just expounds on his elite attitude.

I doubt if anyone can bail the United Socialist Country out. I bet $700 Billion is about 1/2 of what is required. 5% of the country had a great big party, and the other 95% of the people were not invited. CONGRESS is showing just how incompetent they are. They need to be voted out or nothing will change. Individuals better start changing their behavior, in financial management, or this will occur again in 20 years. Stand by for heavy rolls.

Why do they(Democrats) feel this way? Because they feel that thier lives and thier families lives are more important than yours and mine.If you have a police chief or mayor that supports Obama, why dont you call them and ask them if they will be willing to give up thier personal protection and relie on the police for protection( Remeber the antigun police chief should be willing to leave his gun at the station when he goes home at night). I would be willing to bet that not one of them would do it.So anyone that votes for one of these GUNGRABBERS is more or less sending the message that our lives are not as important as our Mayors, Police, President, Vice President, and Senators. One more thing to think about, while these uppityups are locked away safe in thier low crime neighborhoods with thier protection, how many will be left living in high crime neighborhoods with no way to protect thier families until the police show up which may take a while depending on where you live. THINK!!!!!!

We may not know a lot about Palin, but we know all we need to know about Biden. One of the biggest crooks in Washington. Also Obama has his lying radio commercial on where he has someone named Shockey lying for him and saying that he supports the 2nd amendment(Right to keep and bare arms)which was recently upheld by the Supreme Court.Obama, Biden, Clinton,Feinstein, and the majority of Democrats feel that ordinary citizens shouldnt be allowed to own firearms for protection. And big city Police Chiefs and Mayors support them. You know why, because big city Mayors have armed bodyguards and big city police chiefs and cops are allowed to carry off duty and protect thier families.Do you think that any police officer that feels this way, or mayor that feels this way would be willing to give up the armed guards or leave thier firearms in a locker at police headquarters? Heck no! Thier families will be protected while ours are robbed, raped ,and murdered. Will Obama disarm the secret service/NO!

My wife and I have been Republicans for many years and I believe Obama was better prepared and addressed the questions more directly. The president is only as good as his senate and house. No president will change things overnight. It took many for our economy to get into this shape. After last night I'm not sure who I'm voting for. Truthfully we don't have much to choose from.

I have strong thoughts on the debate, but I'll temper them here as I know that these thoughts are biased through my own cognitive filter. So, I'll call it a "draw". This is NOT good news for the McCain camp as this debate was held on the issue(s) (at least nominally, given economic scenario) that are supposed to be McCains strong suit. Obama stood up and demonstrated very different, yet cogent opinions on policy. Meanwhile, McCain has a monkey on his back, and I'll leave that thought here. By the way, will someone PLEASE issue an Amber Alert for Sarah Palin?!

As a life long Republican, and a McCain/Palin supporter...I watched the debate last night and McCain's performance was less than stellar. I don't think Obama's was much better but unfortunately unless you slam dunk your opponent on issues, debates are about perception and Obama LOOKED better last night. The mushy headed swing voters are going to sway this election to whom ever wins and TO THEM, Obama made a better performance. It is going to change MY vote? No. In my actual opinion neither of them made any real headway and I call it a draw, but I also knew as I was watching that Obama was LOOKING better and the polls were going to show Obama as the winner. The news this morning has proved me right. Do I think McCain will make a better President? Yes. Did he LOOK better last night than Obama? NO. McCain's biggest weakness is he is an abysmal public speaker. Obama's strong point is he is an excellent public speaker. McCain knows more and will be a better President, but he has to SELL IT!

Posted by: Alex Location: Greenville on Sep 27, 2008 at 10:24 AM
I watched the debate and I hear that Obama won the economic portion. How? When asked what he would cut, he mentioned new programs but not cutting anything. McCain said he would freeze spending. Barack Obama also got a history lesson and world politics lesson last night. He some some pre written "points" that he hit on everytime, but John McCain has actually been the the places they are talking about and met with the leaders there.

I am a Old Retired Army Officer. In the days when we were fighting the Communists. I have seen many Presidents. Even before Kennedy. Obama agreed with almost everything McCain said. I thought he would argue every point. The speech was like a Navy Officer giving a 18 year old basic training Navy Recurit Seaman a lesson to grow up. If Obama can not handle McCain how is he going to deal with Iran, China, North Korea, Russia. I know Russian Government and the KGB want's Obama as president now they saw how really weak he is. To the real Devil Dog post...Appreciate the backup. Some people just don't have what it takes to stand alone and discuss facts. He/She's moral compass is heading south, like so many others who try to shield their ignorance with falsehoods.

Clearly McCain won the debate. He had much better command of the facts and understanding of both economic and foreign policy. He will make a great president!

Is it just me or does anybody else notice the look on John McCains face whenever he mentions his VP. He's like a little teen boy with a bad bad crush. I think that's what it is. That's why he picked her. Has to be, because it can't be because she has the skill to be VP. Seriously though, look at him when he talks about her. Watch out Cindy. Obama looks that way when he talks about his wife!

Counting the times the Obama agreed with McCain or vice-versa is a useless argument, because there are so many things they need to agree on right now.

I've seen that done before on this site. It's typical of the way the left works. Lies, misinformation, trickery, just about anything goes with them. It's truly disgusting when somebody intentionally misrepresents themselves, posing as another contributor. I wish WITN would find out who that really is, track down their IP address and use it to find out who they really are and then post that information here for eveybody to see. I understand that people disagree but stealing someone elses online name is something only an insecure, lowlife would to.

Hate to break it to some of you but the polls this morning are saying Obama won round one. My guess is McCain supporters will say he won and Obama supporters will say he won.

JOHN GAVE OBAMA A MILITARY,HISTORICAL AND LEGISLATIVE LESSON HE WILL NEVER FORGET. REAL GOOD SOLID PRESENTATION. OBAMA SEEMED LIKE HE WAS IN COLLEGE ON A DEBATE TEAM AND FORGET HIS NOTES....
