Republican gubernatorial candidate Pat McCrory says he would sign an executive order allowing oil drilling off the North Carolina coast.

McCrory announced that this morning in Greenville.

His opponent, Lt. Governor Beverly Perdue is against off shorre drilling.

Top Republicans have sought to lift a moratorium on offshore drilling so that states can have the option of allowing exploration off their shores.

Original Story

Republican gubernatorial candidate Pat McCrory is holding a press conference to announce his position on offshore drilling.

The Charlotte mayor will speak Monday morning in Greenville and Monday afternoon in Raleigh about the issue. Top Republicans have sought to lift a moratorium on offshore drilling so that states can have the option of allowing exploration off their shores.

North Carolina Sen. Elizabeth Dole said last week she supports the proposal, changing her mind after years of opposition.

McCrory's opponent, Lt. Gov. Bev Perdue, opposes the idea.

The federal government believes the billions of barrels of oil off the U.S. coast wouldn't significantly affect production or prices before 2030. A U.S. Energy Information Administration report last year also said the new oil would do little to move prices after that.

Anonymous, I hope you get it when gas is $9 a gallon and you are waiting in line to get it. NC would boost our economy and help the nation. Bev is just another liberal with "their" agenda. They do not care about you, they care about themselves. If they get elected, it will be the Jimmy Carter show once again. They have not idea what to do about energy needs right now. I hear solar and wind when we need oil and nuclear. Yes, nuclear is now even OKd by Greenpeace as a clean form of energy. Carter killed that industry and Clinton enforced the no drill policy. Check the facts. So when gas is higher, taxes are more, what will you say then? You screwed up again. Do not elect any Democrat this coming election. The house and senate are out of touch with a 15% approval...get it.

It's about time a "grown up" is put in a position to take charge of this state. Good old conservative values it what is needed. This state has the brains to come up with innovative ideas, instead of the stale ideas that have been in place since 1964.

How about we support Nuclear power instead of oil. We'd be able to supply jobs to the people that are now getting laid off and stop giving money to the part of the world that despises us. Now thats an idea.

It is about time someone starts talking about progress for this state. With good control the production of oil & gas can be brought to the top as clean energy. You have to have a good supply, otherwise, just how are you going to be able to even get to the beaches. We are in a national emergency, where overseas oil could be shut off at any time. Wouldn't that be the pits? Let North Carolina do it's part in helping America survive.
