Sheriff K-9 Found Dead, Possibly Hit By Car
A memorial service has been scheduled for a law enforcement dog who was killed earlier this week. Dan, a Sheriff's Office K-9, was found dead Tuesday.

Halifax County lawmen are mourning the loss of one of their own. Dan, a Sheriff's Office K-9, was found dead Tuesday.
Authorities say Dan's handler, Corporal Mike Almendarez, found that someone had led the German Shepard out of his home kennel Monday. Almendarez started looking in the area for Dan, but had no luck.
The next day deputies learned that Dan had been found dead under a man's carport. Not knowing who the dog belong to, the man took the dog to the Roanoke Animal Hospital in Roanoke Rapids.
Deputies eventually identified Dan and the vet said he died from blunt force trauma, possibly from a vehicle.
Dan was certified in explosive detection and had been with the Halifax County Sheriff's Office for about eight years.
A memorial service for Dan will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Hockaday Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids.

I am a former K9 handler. My partner Aron (a German shepherd) succomed to cancer in 2007 and when I read this story it opened up a wound that I thought had healed. To the deputy and his family: The thoughts and prayers of me and my family are with you. These special animals are more than "tools" or simply dogs. They are partners and a part of the handler's family. The time that I worked with Aron was the most rewarding time I have ever had as a law enforcement officer. God bless Dan and his family.

I lost a K-9 German Shepherd and I still miss my Fearless friend. Blacky was his name and he's from and now buried in the mountains of Virginia... RIP Officer DAN a true friend and Knight. To Dans Partner and his family my sincere condolence with your loss Of OFFICER DAN.
