UNC System Considers Tuition Increases

University of North Carolina leaders are beginning a process to determine whether students soon will pay more for tuition.

WRAL-TV reports that the Board of Governors of the UNC system meets Thursday in Chapel Hill to discuss exceptions to a 6.5 percent cap on annual tuition and fee increases. The 17-campus system lost almost 16 percent of its funding in the most recent state budget.

A special UNC-Chapel Hill task force is expected to vote sometime this month on a proposal to raise tuition and fees for in-state students by up to 40 percent. The increase would likely be spread over a few years.

The Board of Governors won't vote on any tuition proposals until after February. The schools, the Board of Governors and lawmakers must approve tuition increases.
