The Carteret County Sheriff's Office said investigators have answered several phone calls from residents concerned about an old scam resurfacing in the east.
Deputies said people in Carteret County have been getting phone calls from a scammer saying their grandchild had been jailed in a foreign country.
These callers tell the grandparents if they wire money, the grandchild can post bond. The problem is, once you send some money, they call back requesting more. Deputies said the scammers usually make up a reason such as the judge has increased the bond or there are fines to pay.
Investigators in Carteret County offer the following tips to tip you off that you could be the target of a scam:
- Do not send money to people you don't know
- Get a call back number from the caller: chances are if you dial it, you will find out it's a scam
