NC Businesses Along I-95 Tally Tolling Impact

Opponents say plans to charge a toll on Interstate 95 in North Carolina will make it more difficult for businesses to quickly and cheaply ship goods up and down the highway.

I-95 has been free for decades and is the East Coast's main thoroughfare.

North Carolina, Virginia and Missouri all are considering tolls as a way to pay for expanding and upgrading interstates.

The home-improvement warehouse retailer Lowe's Cos. says the cost from tolls on I-95 may have to be passed on to consumers.

Suppliers send trucks to the Lowe's distribution center just off I-95 near the Virginia line, and Lowe's sends its trucks from there to stores. A company spokeswoman says suppliers may pass the cost from tolls on to Lowe's, which would in turn have to raise prices at its stores.

If they're gonna place tolls on the I-95 then reduce the gas tax (one of the highest in the country!). I guess it costs quite a bit to be able to claim your state as "The good roads state."

Come on this isnt a Democrat or Republican issue we are treated like a heard of cows by both. Its time that we get down to the level of getting what we pay taxes for rather than overspending an stupid spending polocies by the govt. My taxes went up 33% percent in Beaufort County so where did all that money go. In Florida they have lots of tol roads. But I-95 is still free. The Fla turnpike was paid off in the 70s but its such a cash cow its still a tole road. As for the roads Ill drive 17 north and south if I want to get out of pay to drive. After all who wants to drive 95 anyway. Its a dangerous road with no speed limits it would appear. Toll it.

People that live and work along I-95 use that highway in the exact same manner as you use your local highway. They have paid one of the countries highest gas taxes, just like you, for decades so they would have access to good quality roads. Now they are being told because of decades of democrat mismanagement and the wasting of the highway trust fund they are going to have to pay to use the road they have already paid for. Simple daily chores that everyone has to do will now cost them money. Because of I-95 other public roads were not built. They do not have local, nice, divided highways other than I-95.

Well they are using our roads while already making money off of us taxpayers. Don't let these businesses fool you. They still make profit off of us either way. That will never change, but what can change is the fact that these tolls along I-95 will make the yankee population have to pay fees for using OUR ROADS to go on their vacation down to Florida and spending all their money there. If they go through N.C. and don't spend any of their money to support our businesses, then they should at least have to spend money for using our roads to skip across this state toward Florida. Tolls will be a great thing. At least the NC residents will know ways to get by with those tolls unlike the yankees.

Lets put a toll to get those "yankee drivers" on highway 12 and see if you like it.

Those trucks do NOT cheaply ship goods. They charge more than railroads and tear up our roads that are repaired with our tax money! They claim to pay more road taxes to make up for it, but pass the cost along to the consumer, (that's us), who actually pay for it. BOGUS LIES! The rest of the world uses trains for long-haul shipping and trucks for local shipping from the railheads. Bring on the tolls and make them inconvenient and cost prohibitive for trucks!

Mismanagement of funds in our tax and spend state.

Here's an idea... Stop sending idiots to the State House and Governor's mansion. Gas Tax, Income Tax, Highway Use Tax, Property Tax, Tax, tax... Not to mention the state receives federal money to maintain an interstate. Want to see what you will get if you give them 1 inch?? Go to Delaware...they only own 12 miles of I-95, and the toll is now close to $5 to cross the state.

Studies have shown democracy only elects mediocre candidates. The best is never elected. And face it when all candidates are barely better than things floating in a sewer no one wins.

Jim G. the tolls would actaually help cut down on highway use taxes of us to spend for those out of state flockers going to Florida.

NC has the highest gas tax in the south east. That tax if for road maintenance and construction. It is past time for citizens to demand where that tax money is going, instead of being sheep and agreeing with more fees that will serve no better purpose than the already outrageous tax we already pay.

Education lottery= nobody knows where money goes. Toll booths on I95=nobody knows where money goes. I'm sure Obama could scratch that fed check and create a few jobs repairing I95. If they can bail out auto industry and supply millions of tons of aid to N Korea, then a little stretch Of I 95 should be a breeze. Maybe we should ask Mit Romney for a grant.!?Toll booths cost too much and bad idea, NC has problem accounting for money being spent.
