Layoffs At Washington County Hospital

Another hospital is Eastern Carolina is having to make cuts because of the economy.

Washington County Hospital in Plymouth says it is laying off staff. Human resources director Gloria Jones says 15 full time workers are being let go, effective next Wednesday.

Jones says the layoffs are coming from different departments, including nurses, lab techs, food services and housekeeping. Back in October the hospital laid off four people in its business office when it moved those operations to Kansas City, Missouri.

The hospital says the layoffs are due to the weak economy, saying it had to make some changes to ensure long term success.

Already Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston laid off 59 employees in September, while Beaufort County Medical Center in Washington is having employees take a 5% pay cut.

They layoff the good ones and keep the bad! Ones that never come in because their childern are ALWAYS sick..ones with tattoos all over their arms and do not cover them up. Trash is not professional..sorry. Betty Bowen has no idea what she's doing or how to manage a hospital. The hospital is in poor shape and so are the ones left to work there!

Hospital CEO no where to be seen. No words of comfort or comments voiced. Maintaining a low profile. Seh is probally working on her resume.

It's sad to see people lose their jobs, but this site is a sad reflection of the spoiled brats that did get to keep their job. NO one really cares what race of people is taking care of them, just that they are being taken care of. Maybe after a few more generations, this type of stupidity will be eliminated. I'd rather have an Eastern Star member watch over me than the backwards thinking rednecks that are posting on this site.

Bet no one was laid off that was in the Eastern Star! Think on that! The only job security seems to be if you are a part of that group.

Attention Management: One thing to say, "What goes up, must come down! Just continue to walk around with your heads held high and one day (and I feel soon) we will all get to see you go SPLAT!"

First of all, I would like to say that "I am sorry for the ones who have lost their jobs." They were all fine employees and I pray that God will see to it that they get another job where they are respected as employees. I personally feel like the problem comes from the management, or should I say lack of! The Ceo, Betty, has only a high school diploma. The DON, Wendy, had only had 2 years nursing experience before the job was handed over to her. The floor manager, Brenda, also had only 2 years nursing experience before the position was handed over to her. Hello, do we see a pattern here? Their lack of experience has causes the majority of the problems. Even the staff nurses do not feel that they have a "resource person" in any of these positions. It's not a good feeling when you manager doesn't even know how to use the crash cart! Ask Pungo District if they want her back? (LAUGHS) Hold on nurses, I think that you are in for a bumpy ride! Who is next?

Laying off if corporate says to, I understand. It's telling an employee their job is being eliminated due to cutting back, and on the same day hiring someone else fresh out of school to fill there position for less pay...that I have a problem with. It's against all labor laws. The CEO, HR manager, DON, and Lab Director are clueless; however, I believe their time is coming...hopefully sooner than later. Plymouth needs a hospital, but they need someone with a brain to oversee it.

It is obvious by most comments that the public has NO IDEA what's going on at WCH! These furloughs were forced by Corporate in Kansas City. If Betty and Gloria had not complied with the staff reduction....they would have been "reduced" themselves! Also, remember that WCH is a "Critical Access Hospital". This means the government recognises that without this facility, regional medical/trauma centers would be overwhelmed with patients that could have been seen and treated in their own communities. Moreover, lives would be needlessly lost because of delays in access to emergency care. In a complicated world,we recognise that while we all want access to care when we need it. When 60% of the patients seen, never pay a dime, cuts have to made somewhere.......
