"Equal Pay Act" Ensures Equal Pay For Same Work For NC Women, Men

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Dozens of women visiting North Carolina lawmakers are cheering proposed legislation seeking to ensure men and women get paid the same for the same amount and type of work.

Advocates associated with North Carolina Women United attended a lobbying day Tuesday at the Legislative Building in Raleigh. They talked with lawmakers about the group's agenda, which includes improving health care access, promoting economic self-sufficiency and protecting women from violence.

Rep. Deborah Ross of Raleigh filed the "Equal Pay Act" legislation. House Democrats say North Carolina is one of a few states with no equal pay protections.

Ross told advocates at a news conference the Republican-led General Assembly has passed legislation that disproportionately hurts women. They include cutting unemployment benefits and declining to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.
