Cyber Monday Safety Warning

Cyber Monday, a day when online retailers offer deals to holiday shoppers, is becoming increasingly popular, but North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper is warning that convenience doesn't come without risks.

Cooper says shoppers should stick to established websites, and that if an online seller seems unfamiliar, the state Consumer Protection Division might have useful information about them. The Better Business Bureau is another source to see if any complaints have been filed about Internet retailers.

The attorney general says people buying gifts online should also use credit cards to make their purchases. Federal law limits individual liability to $50 if a credit card number gets stolen, and shoppers can dispute unauthorized charges with their credit card company.

WITN's broadcast included more information this morning than is here. Specifically about passwords: that they should be 8 digits and should include letters, numbers, and symbols and not real words. This advise is no longer current; in fact it's quite old. The reasoning behind that advice is that it foils dictionary attacks. Well, it's also hard to remember, and 8 random symbols won't fool a hacker with a fast computer for long. Not long at all. Now what you want to do is use a phrase. Three or more words separated by spaces. Doesn't matter if the words are common. The words should be unrelated but something you can remember. In total you want 15-20 characters or more. Not a song lyric or poem/story line or Bible/holy book verse. For example "headline safety authority". Three words I found on this page. That's 25 digits. "headline" will be tried, but it's one of a few million words in a dictionary. To a hacker, that password might as well be 25 random digits. It'll take years to break.
