State Budget Crunch Impacting ECU Dental School Funding

Public schools and colleges across the state are being asked to return money to the state because of the state budget deficit.

ECU spokesman John Durham says ECU is now being asked to give back 10-million dollars. Durham also says the university will have to tighten spending on travel, energy and non-faculty positions. He also says money for new projects is frozen, including ECU's school of dentistry and family medicine center.

Because of the cuts, ECU may be forced to consider a tuition hike to continue such projects. Durham says the board of trustees will meet Thursday and Friday to talk about the possibility of a tuition hike.
