UPDATE: "Family Beach" Won't Be Biker Alternative

Carolina Beach won't be a North Carolina alternative to a biker festival in South Carolina.

The StarNews of Wilmington reported that a hotel representative withdrew a request that Carolina Beach Town Council endorse an invitation to bikers to visit them instead of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Danny Swinson says he withdrew the request after getting negative public reaction.

Councilman Lonnie Lashley says she wants to make sure local residents know the council was responsive to their concerns.

Swinson had suggested sending invitations to motorcycle clubs that represent charities, firefighters or police officers to visit Carolina Beach instead of Myrtle Beach.

Bikers have been upset with Myrtle Beach since the city decided to crack down on bikers who visit in May because of concerns about rowdy behavior.

Carolina Beach town officials will consider whether to invite motorcyclists to come stay there during Bike Week in nearby Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The StarNews of Wilmington reported the Town Council will vote Tuesday whether to endorse the invitations.

Restaurant and bar representative Danny Swinson said the invitations would go to motorcycle clubs representing charities or those affiliated with police officers or firefighters.

Swinson says the bikers could mean big business, but some council members worry about the negative image and raucous behavior associated with bikers.

Mayor Joel Macon recalls a time when bikers did visit Carolina Beach and it became known as a rough area. Macon says the beach has worked hard to earn a reputation as a family beach.
