A crash Friday afternoon sent a sheriff's deputy and another driver to the hospital.

About 3:30 Friday afternoon the Highway Patrol says Deputy Richard Smith's unmarked Craven County patrol car was hit in Vanceboro on Main Street near the intersection of Streets Ferry Road. Troopers say Justin Lilly of Vanceboro was driving a Chevy pick-up that crashed head on with the deputy.

Troopers say Lilly's right knee locks up without warning, and he was unable to hit the brake after crossing the center line. They say a few months ago Lilly caused property damage at a high school because of his knee injury.

Both drivers were taken to Carolina East Medical Center.
