"The Michael J. Fox Show" Debuts Tonight

(NBC News) Michael J. Fox returns to NBC tonight.

It's been more than a decade since he's been a regular on series television because of his battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Now the former "Family Ties" star is back starring as a family man and TV news anchor.

Like the character he plays on his new show fox's decision to go back to work was not his alone.

"To my surprise they were like, 'don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out, we were waiting for this!" he laughs when describing his family's reaction to his new role.

It's a sign of how Fox and his family have adjusted to life with Parkinson's Disease.

"I think it's cool to do a show about a person with a disability who's absorbed it into their lives as most people with disabilities do," he says.

Fox says in most ways the show is a traditional comedy mixing workplace and family.

Parkinson's is simply one element.

"Breaking Bad" co-star Betsy Brandt plays Fox's wife in the new show, and in tonight's second episode she's joined by Fox's real life wife Tracy Pollan, who guest stars in the show as their neighbor.
