It's one woman's vision to keep kids off the streets and in school. So she made it her mission to set up an afternoon school program in Tarboro in Edgecombe County where families didn't have to pay a dime for tutoring or activities.

Parents and staff at the Fountain Youth Development Center are facing a harsh reality. With more than 80 students, the donated facility is too small, cold, and cramped for them to grow. With the downturn in the economy more parents depend on the free bus service to the center, snacks, tutoring and activities for their children.

Now there's a waiting list hat program director, Shirley McNeil, looks at as one less child getting the service and care they deserve.

"We are hoping someone will be able to help us out with more space as well as someone can help us out with some funds so we can get some more help, because you can see we need some more teachers. We need more tutors. We need some help," said McNeil.

McNeil says they hope to build another center. Right now, her church, St. Paul Missionary Baptist, is allowing them to use this historic home. But McNeil hopes to one day have a center that will accommodate 150 children- .almost double than the number she has now.
