State Farmers Market Looking For Massive Watermelon

RALEIGH (AP) - The State Farmers Market is offering $1,000 to anyone who can grow North Carolina's largest watermelon.

The market is conducting a contest in conjunction with its annual Watermelon Day scheduled for Aug. 1.

All entries must be from North Carolina, and growers must be prepared to identify where the watermelon was grown. Only one entry will be allowed per person.

The grower with the heaviest watermelon will win bragging rights and $1,000. The second-heaviest melon earns $500. Third place brings $300 and fourth place earns $200.

Melons should be free of decay and soft spots, and stems should be trimmed to 3 inches. All entries will become the property of the State Farmers Market.

In 2012, H.C. Williams of Bailey set an event record with his 232-pound watermelon.
