After 33 years of roaming the sidelines Southside head coach DeWayne Kellum has decided to retire and was honored Friday night during his final home game.
Kellum led the Seahawks to a combined record of 49-9 from 2002 through 2006 and made state championship appearances in 2002 and 2004.
Kellum's coaching career started at Chocowinity High School in 1985, which eventually became Southside, where he coached baseball and basketball and the same school from which he graduated.
The school honored to the longtime coach before the Seahawks game against Riverside with a plaque for more than 30 years of service.
Kellum said he was touched by the pregame ceremonies, but said once the game started, it was all business.
Riverside ended up getting the win. The final score was Riverside 31 Southside 28.
