A Robeson County animal shelter that faced a lawsuit and state charges of inadequate veterinary care and overcrowded cat cages is facing new allegations.
The Fayetteville Observer reported Wednesday that officials are denying allegations that the shelter's staff has sent living dogs and cats to be dumped at a landfill.
Animal rights advocate Susan Barrett of Winston-Salem sued the shelter over its treatment of animals, but dropped the case after it made reforms. Barrett says live animals were found several times among the dead dumped at the landfill. She plans to present evidence supporting her claims at the next county commissioners meeting on Monday.
County Health Director Bill Smith said the dumping happened once and isn't a pattern.
