Greenville is proposing to more than double the cost of garbage pickup than for some services. The increase is written into the new budget proposal, which the Greenville City Council is scheduled to vote on Thursday night.
City officials say residents who leave trash on the curb will pay about 32 % more, if the budget is passed. Those who want backyard pickup will go from $26 a month to $40.80 , which is a 57% increase.
Residents in Kinston, pay $22. 50 a month for all trash pick up and they have fewer employees mainly because of the automated trash truck that only requires one person to get the trash. Greenville has three people on a truck and about three times the amount of workers.
Since personnel pay is a big part of the expense, some residents, say the city should think about cutting costs.
"I know a number of them are coming up to retirement age and I'm sure the city could work out something for early retirement or finding other positions in the city or go to an automated system or at least all curbside," said Grenville resident Richard Crisp.
Crisp says there should be an exemption for those who can't take their trash to the curb.
