38 people across the state died in work related accidents last year, that's according to Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry, who helped honor one company in Beaufort County Tuesday for creating a safe working environment.
PotashCorp in Aurora plays is the world's largest crop nutrient company and a major employer in Beaufort County. Tuesday, a special luncheon was held honoring 150 employees and employers for their hard work to improve safety at the workplace.
Commissioner Berry presented the Carolina Star along with a 12-year re-certification to PotashCorp.The Carolina Star is the highest safety recognition given by the state.
The award comes after a fatal accident on the work site in 2001. Potash safety manager, Greg Rowe says the accident was a result of unsafe work practices. Since then, the company which has about 900 employees has worked hard to improve its safety techniques.
