Greenville police say they named the wrong man who was arrested for his part in a fake kidnapping to cover up a drug deal.

Police now say it was Jimmie Earl Speight who was arrested for communicating threats in the case, not James Lavelle Speight as was originally reported.

The other Speight is in jail on other unrelated charges. Police say they have apologized to the man for the mix-up.

In the original case, police say Ralph McCoy of Tarboro reported he was kidnapped, forced to take money from the ATM, then buy crack and smoke it. McCoy is now charged with lying to police.

A man who reported he was kidnapped, forced to take money from the ATM, then buy crack and smoke it, is now charged with lying to police.

Investigators say 57-year-old Ralph McCoy of Tarboro lied to cover up a drug deal.

McCoy called Greenville Police and said he was kidnapped February 3rd by two men and forced to drive to an ATM. He said he was robbed of $1,200, forced to buy crack and smoke it, and his car was stolen.

Investigators found McCoy's car on Myrtle Avenue with 27-year-old James Speight of Greenville inside.

Police believe McCoy traded the use of his car for drugs.

McCoy is charged with filing a false report. Speight was arrested on communicating threats warrants and is being held without bond.
