The man accused of biting off part of another man's ear went before a Carteret County judge and later told WITN that he was only trying to stop a bar fight.

Ryan Baker was let out of jail on a $5,000 bond after being charged with felony maiming. Police believe he's the one who bit off part of Mark Thomas' ear during a fight outside of the Redneck Saloon early Sunday.

Baker told WITN that he was trying to break up a fight and he started to get attacked and kicked. He says the only way to get the people to stop beating him was to bite Thomas' ear. Baker says he and Thomas do not know each other.

Baker's next court appearance is May 18th.
