Groundhog Day: Punxsutawney Phil Sees Shadow

Pa. groundhog 'predicts' 6 more weeks of winter
Eds: APNewsNow. Updates with groundhog predicting six more weeks of winter. Will be updated.
Pennsylvania's famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil has emerged from his lair and saw his shadow, in the process predicting six more weeks of winter.

But, at this rate, that might not be so bad.

The groundhog made his "prediction" on Gobbler's Knob, a tiny hill in the town for which he's named about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Temperatures were near freezing when he emerged at dawn, unseasonably warm, and are forecast to climb into the mid-40s in a winter that's brought little snow and only a few notably cold days to much of the East.

Thursday's ceremony is largely that: Phil's prediction is determined ahead of time by the Inner Circle, a group which dons top hats and tuxedos and decides in advance what the groundhog will predict.

Previous story:
With this winter being unseasonably mild in the East, six more weeks of it might not be so bad.

This puts a little less pressure on Punxsutawney Phil, the Pennsylvania groundhog who will perform the annual Groundhog Day festivities Thursday morning.

Legend has it that if Phil sees his shadow, winter will hang around for another six weeks. If not, spring is on its way.

Organizers say 15,000 to 18,000 people are expected to witness the furry creature's prognostication on Gobbler's Knob at 7:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

The tiny hill in Punxsutawney where the festivities will take place is about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

It's a groundhog, an animal, for crying out loud. I'd run into a hole too, if a bunch of nutty people were around me with cameras and such. Truthfully, I can step outside my front door and get a daily weather report; don't need a little critter to tell me anything.

How can people acutally get upset over this quaint little tradition. It's just a silly little game and kind of fun. Lighten up people learn to enjoy the little things. There are too many big things to get upset by.

At what point did we actually start having winter. Temps in the 60's on a consistant basis is not winter to me.

I hate this stupid tradition. Of course there is going to be 6 more weeks of winter. Because that's how the world turns.

At dawn there is no sun up, so how did he see his shadow? TV camera lights? If so, this is just another TV fairy tale. It is a shame when they pulled him out of his den that he did not bite them again.
