The Pamlico-Tar River Foundation (PTRF) unveiled a new camping platform for Tar River lovers with a ribbon-cutting Tuesday. The platform located about a mile from downtown Tarboro in Edgecombe County is on the Panola family farm and it's only accessible by water. It is the first in a series of Tar River camping platforms owned and managed by PTRF. A second tent camping site is also complete near Dunbar in Edgecombe County. The platform and camping site are open to the public to provide overnight camping facilities to recreational users of the Tar River. Online reservations available beginning Wednesday. Reservations must be made to stay at the sites.
PTRF's goal is to build a continuous system of platforms 8-15 miles apart spanning from the headwaters of the Tar River in Granville County to the Pamlico River in Beaufort, Hyde, and Pamlico Counties.
The Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Family Foundation and the North Carolina Adopt a Trail Program funds paid for the platforms.
