Two Onslow County American Red Cross volunteers helping in New York and New Jersey following Hurricane Sandy are now back home.

Helen Miller and Charlotte Rodriguez worked non-stop to help Sandy victims since November 1st.

Rodriguez says she couldn't believe her eyes when she came face to face with the devastation. "I truly was shocked. It was really worse than I expected. A lot of homes destroyed totally. Unlike North Carolina, they're never prepared for hurricanes, so their windows were not boarded up. Some of them even stayed in their homes up on the third floor. And some of them got stranded there. Some were okay, but some lives were lost."

On her first day in New York City, Rodriguez saw homes were leveled and boats scattered throughout the neighborhoods she visited. While a lot of these people had nothing--she was proud to see they were still helping their neighbors.

Rodriguez says she was really glad to have gone up there to help those victims for a few weeks and she says she might go back soon.
