North Carolina Beach To Consider Banning Dogs

A North Carolina beach that has made a name for itself by allowing dogs is considering limits on when the animals can run in the sand.

The StarNews of Wilmington reports that the Oak Island Town Council will consider a ban on dogs on the beach during daytime hours.

Councilwoman Carol Painter introduced the ban after seeing a dog lunging toward a child. She also suggested giving animal control more power to deal with nuisance dogs on the beach as a compromise.

Mayor Betty Wallace says she hears few complaints about dogs, especially with the number of dogs that come to the beaches because of their loose rules on the animals.

Dogs are allowed year-round at Oak Island, but must be on a leash March 15 to Oct. 15.
