Doctors say new technology at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville will drastically improve treatment methods for patients with brain disorders.
The new stereotactic radiosurgery system, "Perfexion" at the Gamma Knife center gives doctors the opportunity to reach any area on the brain to the mid-cervical spine area, and pinpoint tumors and other disorders with direct treatment.
Dr. Stuart Lee says it not only works, but it's easier on patients as well. "Overall, very good success. And the nice thing is, the patients have just an hour or so recovery, they're out of the hospital the same day, and they can go back to their normal activities usually the next day."
Dr. Lee says the machine allows non-invasive treatment of brain disorders, such as metastatic brain tumors, meningiomas, trigeminal neuralgia and vascular malformations.
Vidant has had the machine for about two months and Dr. Lee says they can treat up to four patients per day.
Dr. Lee says it's one of only two machines of this advanced technology in the state.
