New Bern Is A Tree City For 15 Years Straight

On Tuesday, the City of New Bern announced it was awarded for it's forestry efforts for the 15th year in a row by a national organization.

New Bern has been awarded the certification as a Tree City, USA from the Arbor Day Foundation.

The city said to earn that title, it had to meet four criteria: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and celebrating Arbor Day.

In an effort to keep up the trend, even after Hurricane Irene took down trees during 12 hours of whipping winds, the city said residents worked to plant suitable replacements for the area.

The City of New Bern will celebrate its Tree City, USA award on National Arbor Day, which is on April 26th.
