NC, SC State Line Isn't Where Folks Thought It Was

A modern survey of the state line between North Carolina and South Carolina has sent 93 property owners into another state.

The border was first drawn in the 1700s, but wasn't surveyed again until now. The new line was drawn with computers and GPS systems, narrowing it down to the centimeter.

The old border was off by several hundred feet in some areas.

The owner of a Lake Wylie store says he will likely have to close because he is now in North Carolina, where gas is 30 cents more a gallon and he can't sell fireworks.

For property owners, most of them around Charlotte, NC, it will be a bureaucratic nightmare of changing schools, phone numbers, driver's licenses and even the lawmakers they call to complain about the problems.

Dose this mean they may have been paying too much for taxes in North Carolina or do they get a tax bill for not paying enough!

If the lines had ben drawn right the first time, they would have been NC citizens and paid more taxes. NC taxes are higher than those in SC. Property taxes in NC are almost double that of SC. Nc's taxes on goods is 7.75% and SC's id 7%. Overall NC charges more taxes than SC.

These people who have been lied to all these 300 years should be compensated by the government. Give them each a check for 50 thousand dollars.

If you are a good person, you really won't have time to engage in negative activities:i,e,this crazy verbal dialogue about this malcontent!Obviously, the man is wrong. This is easy for most people to see.None who is siding w/this guy will go to work and use your FREEDOM OF SPEECH right to express that you don't like anything, much less say it to the C.O.E.Some of you don't have the where-with-all to attend your own household! This form of media is wonderful but it allows for a lot of stupidity that would otherwise never be tolerated. There is a term called ORDER...Try to comprehend the meaning.

I feel terrible for this man who had to shut his store down. He needs to sue for the damages this has done him. He got treated wrong and should get reimbursed big time. I fully blame the state government for average gas prices being 30 cents higher per gallon than in South Carolina and 20 cents higher per gallon than in Virginia. This gas tax is outrageous and has a lot to do with why these corrupt politicians must get out of office. This state government is as awful as they come. Toll roads would actually help ease the burden on North Carolina gas buyers.

You are right. NC is the 10th poorest state. It is the 9th highest in poverty, 9th highest in unemployment(those who are counted), with median income of $43.275 per year. On the bright side SC figures are worse.

Why does this have to change after 300 years? Because of a piece of paper? Stupidity.

Agreed. Re-draw the danged line. Doesn't 300 years count for something? A person can claim Squatter's Sights over a shorter period of time... Maybe SC can claim Squatter's Rights on this land? haha

To clarify: re-draw the line on the maps, not the land.

me, The gas tax in NC is higher than in SC. We pay more for gas because of this tax. That is why gas is cheaper in surrounding states. All of their gas taxes are cheaper.

There isn't. The border isn't a real thing. Please, go to the border and tell me where the United States stops and Mexico begins without any signs or equipment.

Count your blessings. It could have been worse. At least you are still nowhere near Yankee territory. NC is badly overun with them nowadays though.
