On the same day the state Transportation Department is hosting a meeting to discuss a long-term solution for the section of N.C. Highway 12 breached by Hurricane Irene in 2011, that part of the road is closed due to high water.

The closure from Oregon Inlet Bridge to Rodanthe started at 7:30 p.m. and will remain closed through high tide Tuesday morning until roadway conditions have returned to normal. Motorists are advised to use caution in the area and to watch for posted signs with roadway information.

Monday's meeting is being held in Manteo. Tuesday there will be a meeting in Rodanthe and Wednesday on Ocracoke Island.

Officials will discuss an environmental assessment that identifies the preferred alternative as a permanent bridge where a temporary bridge is now located. DOT plans to award a contract for construction this summer.

Meanwhile, DOT is considering options for an area damaged in Rodanthe. Both options involve a bridge, and DOT plans to award that contract this fall.

Both projects are part of the plan to replace the Bonner Bridge over Oregon Inlet.

NC 12 was closed for nearly a day over the weekend because of overwash.

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office says that NC 12 at Mirlo Beach is closed as of 8:30 p.m. and will be so through the night. The NC DOT says the road was closed for about 18 hours this weekend from the Bonner Bridge to Rodanthe as a nor’easter pushed seawater and sand onto parts of the two lane highway.

It opened back up around 2:05 p.m. Sunday, before this most recent shutdown.
