Local Chef Named Semi-Finalist For Prestigious Award

A local chef is getting as honored as one of the best in her field.

Vivian Howard of Kinston's "Chef And The Farmer" has been named as a semi-finalist in the category of Best Chef in the Southeast, in the prestigious honors distributed by the James Beard Foundation.

Howard is one of 20 semi-finalists up for the award, and it may be a bright spot in what's been a rough patch for her restaurant.

A kitchen fire has forced "Chef And The Farmer" to renovate. Their website doesn't give an exact date to reopen, but they say it will happen sometime this spring.

Great news! Chefs like Vivian are elevating the best traditions of fine southern cuisine and leaving behind the gross mischaracterizations of southern food as being fattening and unhealthy. Particularly awesome that she buys local and gives hard working family farmers their due. Hope she wins and can't wait for the restaurant to re-open!

She deserves an award. The Chef and the Farmer is the best restaurant in eastern North Carolina.
