The average amount of income tax refunds is down slightly this year.
The average refund check is just under $2,950. That's down slightly from last year's refunds of about $3,022. Through March 10th, the IRS says it has issued 59.2 million refunds totaling $174.4 billion. During the same period last year, the agency issued 59 million refunds totaling $178.3 billion dollars.
The number of taxpayers getting tax refunds direct deposited is up 3%. The deadline for taxpayers to file this year is April 17th.
