Hot Jobs, Cool Jobs In The Heat

With these soaring temperatures outside, some people are able to escape the extreme heat by heading to work and the air conditioning. Others are not.

Carriage House dry cleaners in New Bern is one hot place and the only thing keeping the workers cool are the fans. Workers stand and press clothes while steam billows around them in the heat of the day.

Just about twenty minutes away at Kites Supermarket in Vanceboro the highest the temperature reaches is 65 degrees, according to the owner Mike Kite. He says it usually is between 55 and 65 degrees. Kite says the cool temperatures are what he is use to working in during the summer.

Carriage House dry cleaners owner Lillie Nobles says they prefer not to know how hot it gets inside the cleaners. "We don't put thermometers anywhere in the back because we really don't want to know sometimes. Knowing makes it worse."

Carriage House cleaners say they do take cooling breaks throughout the day.
