Home Electricity Use Falls To Lowest Level Since 2001

(NBC News) When they're all sold they're gone. Tuesday was the last day it's legal in America to make or import conventional incandescent light bulbs.

The phase out of the last of the incandescent bulbs is a bright symbol of most of the trends in energy use in our country, and going into 2014, those trends are startlingly positive.

Electricity use is down 6%, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Burning coal to make electricity is down 20%, while oil and gasoline use are down 14%, lower now than in 1973 when the Arab oil embargo forced Americans to line up to buy gas and rethink our energy policies.
