Highway 264 Could Become Interstate

A heavily traveled highway in the east could be getting a status upgrade as early as Friday which could help spur economic development.

Greenville Mayor Allen Thomas says a section of Highway 264 between Greenville and Wilson could become an interstate in the near future.

Thomas met with Mayor Steve Tripp of Ayden and Mayor B.J. Murphy of Kinston on Thursday to discuss ways to improve regional transportation. He says having an interstate in the area could be a major boost to the economy.

"The designation of an interstate for 264 is extremely important, and something we're working towards. That is an order winner or an order loser for major industry. That's a check-off point for whether or not they come to your community," said Mayor Thomas.
