The Greenville City Council voted five to one Monday night to pass a resolution that opposes the controversial constitutional amendment on the May 8 ballot in North Carolina.

Councilwoman Marion Blackburn, who represents District 3, introduced the resolution against North Carolina Amendment One, which would define man-woman marriage as “the only domestic legal union.”

The only council member to vote against Blackburn's resolution was Max Joyner, Jr., who represents District 5.

Mayor Allen Thomas did not vote; he only does so if his vote is need to break a tie.

Gay marriage is illegal in North Carolina, but amendment supporters want that placed in the constitution to add another layer of protection for traditional marriage.
