Greenville Police Officer Of The Year

The Greenville Police Department says Corporal Michael Broadwell has been selected as Police Officer of the Year by the American Legion, Greenville Post 39.

Corporal Broadwell was nominated for his heroic behavior during several occasions.

Broadwell was the first responding officer during the shootings outside Walmart and the Kellum LawFirm back in June. He also apprehended an armed and dangerous suspect last year.

On September 14, 2013, the suspect shot into a building on Meridian Drive. The suspect tried to run away, but was quickly apprehended by Corporal Broadwell.

Greenville Police Chief Hasan Aden says, "Corporal Broadwell's actions in this case are indicative of his advanced skills as a police officer and as a human being. He was faced with a fleeing gunman who had just fired shots into a building. The suspect reached into his waistband to retrieve the handgun upon seeing Corporal Broadwell pursuing him. Corporal Broadwell used effective defensive tactics and sound judgment to disarm and apprehend the suspect. He was a clear choice for the Officer of the Year award and has numerous other examples of outstanding police work year in and year out."

Broadwell graduated from Appalachian State University in 2001. He received a Master of Public Administration degree from East Carolina University in 2007. Broadwell was hired by the Greenville Police Department in 2004. Prior to that, he was a police officer in Boone, North Carolina.
