It's been a topic of discussion for decades in Greenville, but during Monday night's city council meeting, members decided it's time to move forward with plans to build a parking deck downtown.
Council member Marion Blackburn says, the continued growth of the city, has made this build necessary. The estimated $4 million project is expected to alleviate the stress of parking for visitors and residents. Blackburn says the council's main focus right now is finding the best place to build the parking deck. They have narrowed it down to 4 locations: Evans Street and 4th Street, Cotanche and 4th Street and two areas on Dickinson.
"I think there's a sense of urgency on council with completing the parking deck because we are looking at economic development and really trying to put an emphasis on it. I think that, I don't know how these things work, but I would think within a year or two we could have begun construction, if not completed it," said Blackburn.
Blackburn says a number of studies will have to done before council can decide he best place to build a parking deck including input from residents and downtown businesses and discussions with city planners.
